From Us to You

Dear friend,

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the courageous decision that you are considering. Your selflessness will allow one of our dreams to come true. Know that the choices you make will allow your baby to have a full and complete life with parents that already have great love for your unborn child.

We are Erik and Melanie. We met through an online dating service in 2004. After our first date, where we talked for over 4 hours, we knew we were meant to be together. We were married on a beautiful, sunny day in 2007. Our days have been filled with fun and laughter, camping, taking trips and hanging out with family and friends. We adopted our beautiful daughter in 2012, and she has brought so much joy and laughter to our home and to our family.

Erik works for a large cable company and spends his days setting up people’s homes for cable, internet and phone. He is fortunate to have 3 days off every week and spends some of that time with our daughter while Melanie is at work. Sundays we spend together as a family. Melanie is an elementary school teacher. She always wanted to be a teacher so that she would have holidays and summers home with her children. We enjoy camping, going to festivals and playing outside. Riding bikes in the summer and going sledding in the winter are some of our favorite things.

We live in a quiet neighborhood with lots of kids. Our house is very spacious and has room for everyone. We spend most of our time in the kitchen/living room area and in our great backyard. We have lots of grass and a playground right in our own yard. Melanie loves to cook and makes most of our meals at home. Nearby there are many great parks, swimming pools, golf courses and the lakefront is right down the street. We have several museums and libraries in our town and one town over there is a zoo! We are so excited to be able to introduce your child to all of these places and help them to discover the world.

We are very close to both our families. Melanie’s parents currently live in California but are in the process of moving to Wisconsin to be closer to us. They are so happy to be moving closer for the next baby in our family. Erik’s family all live very close to us. His parents, grandma, brother and sisters are all minutes away. Needless to say we see them a lot! There is always a family cookout, someone’s birthday party or just going to lunch after church. Our family is so excited to welcome one more little one into the bunch!

You are giving us a gift we could never give to ourselves. We are eternally grateful for that and wish you many blessings along your journey.

“If there ever comes a day when we can’t be together keep me in your heart, I’ll stay there forever.” Winnie the Pooh

Blessings,
Erik and Melanie

About Erik

I still remember the day I met Erik. We were meeting for dinner at a local restaurant, but had never met in person before. I saw this cute boy walking through the parking lot and thought, “I sure hope that’s my date!” It was and we have been together ever since. I first fell in love with Erik’s deep commitment to his family. We moved from California to Wisconsin so we could be closer to them. Before we had our daughter he was a great uncle to our nieces. He now is both a wonderful father and a great uncle. During the week he spends his days off taking care of our daughter. This has been a great chance for them to build their relationship while having lots of one-on-one time together. I know he is so excited to add another child to our family and will continue to be one of the best dads I know.

About Melanie

The day I met Melanie, I knew it was going to last. We met for dinner at a local restaurant. We had so much in common and shared similar interests. We talked for 4 hours. I knew Melanie had a motherly instinct when I saw her teach little ones and interact with our friends’ kids. Melanie, being a teacher, has a lot of breaks and all summers off. This allows us to take a lot of fun vacations together as a family with our daughter. The most wonderful thing I decided to do was to share my life and heart with her. I know deep down in my heart she is very excited to add another child to our family and will continue to be the awesome mom she is today!

Our Families

Erik comes from a very large family. We live minutes from most of them and see them weekly. Our daughter already has several cousins and they are anxiously awaiting a new playmate. Melanie’s parents live in California but we still see them often. They are so excited to welcome their second grandchild and cannot wait to meet him or her. Both our families are very supportive of our decision to adopt again and cannot wait to welcome our newest addition.

We have lots of friends that live close us. We spend time going to festivals, running, and having game nights. Many of our friends have small children and we get together regularly for “family” dinner nights with everyone. The kids all enjoy playing together while the parents get a chance to chat. They are all so excited that we will be adding another small one to our “family.”

Our Home

Our home has everything we want and need with plenty of room for us to add one more. The main room, where we spend most of our time, has seen many friends and family gather for a good time. The kitchen has plenty of room for Melanie to cook up delicious meals and our dining room table expands to seat everyone (we had 20 people around the table for Thanksgiving Dinner!). Our neighborhood is filled with children and families. We spend lots of time outside riding bikes, playing with friends and going running. We are close to parks, a large lake, bike paths and playgrounds. Our town has several museums, movie theaters and there is zoo very close to us.

Our Lifestyle

We live a fairly simple, not too extravagant, lifestyle. We love to go on walks or bike rides around our neighborhood or down by the lake. We cook most of our meals at home, but do love to go out to eat too. We enjoy hanging out with family and friends playing games, roasting marshmallows or going to the park. We live right by Lake Michigan and lots of smaller lakes. We love to go to the beach and look for seashells, cool rocks and sea glass. We spend a lot of time in our backyard playing and working in our garden.

Our Cat - Rey

We have one adorable cat named Rey (named from StarWars, one of our most favorite movie series!). She came to our back door as a wild cat and Kensi fell in love with her. The feeling was mutual and Rey came right into our home. She loves to be around our family, whether we are eating dinner or reading books before bed, she is in the same room with us. She loves to play with toys and is one of the nicest cats we have ever met. She absolutely adores Kensi and meows for her when she is not home. I know Rey will be excited for another person to pet her and to play with her mouse!

Our Faith

Our faith is very important to us. Both of us grew up in Christian families (Erik Catholic and Melanie Presbyterian). We go to church nearly every Sunday and always for important events. Melanie teaches at a Catholic school where Kensi also attends. We pray before meals and every night before we go to bed. We are confident that our faith is why we have our beautiful little girl and are hopeful that God will bless us with another child.

Family Traditions

We have lots of traditions in our family. Here are some of our favorites!

Christmas Eve: We always go to church on Christmas Eve. We love to drive around and look at Christmas lights before we head home. When we get home we read the Christmas story from the Bible so that we don’t forget why we really celebrate Christmas. Then it’s off to bed to wait for Santa to come!

Gotcha Day: Kensi’s “Gotcha Day” (the day she legally became our daughter) is in December. We always take her to go and see Santa Claus and get her picture taken. Then she gets a special toy or stuffed animal and we go out to eat. This has been such a fun way to celebrate this extra special day for her.

Easter: On Easter we go to church in the morning and then have a family lunch or dinner in the afternoon. We always stuff a TON of eggs for all of our nieces and nephews (and Kensi too!). Last year there were over 300 eggs for 8 kids! We have a big Easter Egg hunt and just let all of the kids go crazy!

Summer: We love to go camping in the summer. We just got a new bigger tent! We go hiking and fishing and make a campfire every night. It’s a great time to get away from our busy lives and just enjoy each other and nature.

Why We are Choosing to Adopt

We are choosing to adopt again because we had such a positive experience during our first adoption and would like to grow our family. We would love to have another little one in our home and be able to give our daughter a younger sibling. We are unable to have children naturally, and adoption has already granted us the ability to have our beautiful daughter. Our family is very supportive of our decision to adopt and has encouraged us every step of the way.

Our Relationship With Kensi's Birth Mother

Unfortunately we don’t have a relationship with Kensi’s birthmother. After she was born we were asked to send pictures every few months. We were happy to do so and sent all the pictures we could. We never heard back from her birth mother and so we reached out to ANLC. They were unable to get a hold of her either. We decided to stop sending pictures (we weren’t even sure if she was getting them) but said that if at any time she wanted to reconnect with us we would be willing to do so. We are hopeful that sometime in the future we may be able to reconnect with her again.
