From Us to You

Hello,

Our family has been united by love, not by blood. We honor and respect our children’s birth parents and want to foster your continued relationship with your precious baby if you do choose adoption. The weight of this decision is heavy, and we pray that you are finding the support and love around you to help you on this journey. Being unable to have biological children of our own, our hope and desire is to continue to grow our family through adoption, and we would love to provide opportunities for you to share in this relationship as well. We want to put the wellbeing of our children first, and that includes being open about their adoption story.

You can read a lot more about our family, but if there is anything specific that you would like to ask, we hope you don’t hesitate to reach out. We would be glad to answer anything on your mind. In the meantime, here is the big stuff…

About Matt

Matt is one of the most honest and loyal people I know, and I am so blessed to have him as my partner in marriage and parenting. We met in college, and I knew after only a couple of months that I could see myself marrying this man.

He is so hardworking at whatever task he has before him. His career as a financial planner is just the perfect fit for him! Matt is a numbers guy, but he also loves meeting one-on-one to teach and encourage others. His flexibility to work from home or the office is a definite bonus to his job! Kinley and Judah love when he can join us for lunch and take little breaks throughout the day to come out and play a quick game or just run around outside together.

When Matt gets busy playing with the kids he’s really just the biggest kid of the bunch. He loves jumping on the trampoline, kicking around the soccer ball, playing tag, and having nerf wars with the kids. He is always coming up with new creative games to play, and Kinley is starting to pick up on the creative play too. The kids come running each day when they hear the garage door open or he comes walking down the hallway after working from home.  Judah is so cute running up yelling, “Daddy,” as Kinley is already carrying a game she’s picked out to play with him. He naturally gives me a chance to take a break while playing with the kids as I make supper and relax for a few minutes. I’m so proud of this hardworking goofball that always puts his family first.

About Mariah

The first time I met Mariah during our freshman year of college, I didn’t know what to say. I was very shy, but eventually I built up the courage to ask her on a date. What I failed to realize was that Mariah didn’t know it was date! She thought I was inviting her to a group event, but after figuring out that none of our friends were going, she put two and two together. Fortunately she still showed up!

We still laugh about our first date, but that day was definitely one of the most important days of my life. I’m thrilled to be able to call Mariah my wife and am so proud of the woman she has become. Her dream job title has always been “Mom,” and she loves our kids passionately. She earned her degree in elementary education because of her love for kids, and now intends on focusing her skills at home with lots of one on one time with each of the kiddos.

Every week they take trips to a local park, the zoo, or just head over to the grandparents’ house to swim with all of the cousins! But some of the most notable “proud moments” I’ve had as her husband is when I see her caring for the everyday needs of each of the kids. When they are sick, she knows exactly what they need. When Kinley has bad dreams at night, Mariah climbs up into her bunk bed to comfort her. She is especially impressive on the tough days, the days when Judah is acting like a one year old and Kinley is acting like a teenager (even though she is only five). On those days, she still finds a way to get supper on the table and get them to bed on time. She is my superhero, and I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with her.

The Kiddos

Kinley loves being a big sis, and Judah has officially taken the title of “little salami”, according to Kinley who has laid claim to being the biggest ham! Kinley is a fun loving girl who enjoys dancing, board games, and most of all… JUMPING. Ever since she was a little girl she would jump around everywhere. This year she was excited to learn how to do a flip on the trampoline! She also started kindergarten this year and Mariah has enjoyed getting back into “teacher mode”. It is so fun to see Kinley get excited as she starts learning to read and write, but she especially enjoys math, much to Matt’s excitement.

Judah has developed quite a knack for mischief. He basically learned to run before walking. We are pretty sure big Sis has shared her love for jumping with her little brother, because this boy is more than content jumping on anything. While his typical goals usually involve knocking things over, he has recently begun to enjoy building! Although his small block towers don’t get very high before the desire kicks in to knock it over. Mariah and I both grew up with a couple siblings, and it is so fun to watch the kids be able to grow up together. They are certainly ready for another partner in crime.

The Team - Our Families

We are surrounded by a big family that we fortunately get to see often. Matt’s parents live just a few minutes away, and they love “Grandparent overnight”. It’s a fun time for the kids to have quality time with their grandparents. They love finding buried treasure in the big sandbox, jumping in leaves in autumn, playing on the large playset Papaw built, and swimming in the pool on hot summer days.

Mariah’s  family is just a couple hours away, so we get to spend a lot of time celebrating holidays, hiking at state parks, or going on small vacations with the whole family. We both have siblings nearby with families of their own. We all love getting together to play at each other’s homes and especially at Grandma and Papaw’s for large celebrations.

HQ - There's No Place Like Home

It seems like we are spending more time at home these days, and we are thankful to have the space for the kids to run around and enjoy the outdoors. Even in the winter, the kids are in a constant state of discovery in the backyard. This is where they get to achieve new heights and accomplishments any day. Kinley has been so proud to be able to complete the monkey bars on her own and learn new crazy moves on the trampoline.

Even when confined inside, the kids have their own place for creative play. Some of our best memories are in front of a warm fire building a train set with the kids or trying to build a block tower as high as possible before Judah comes crashing in like Godzilla on a mission of destruction!

It Takes a Village - Our Community

We are blessed to be surrounded by a very supportive community, and our church is foundational to our lifestyle. There are several young families in our church, and we can’t emphasize enough how much we love that Kinley and Judah have the opportunity to grow up with so many close friends. If there is ever an emergency, we know that we have several families that we trust who are able and willing to lend a hand. As Christian parents, we do see one of our responsibilities is to explain the grace God has given to us and the need to be gracious and loving to those around us as well.

Our Adventures - The Fun Stuff

While we like to think that every day is an adventure in our home, we really enjoy getting out to do some true exploring. We will often take a day to go kayaking down the creek or discover some new trails at one of the surrounding state parks. Sometimes we just find time for a quick bike trip around the neighborhood or we will stop and play some tennis for a couple hours.

Some of our favorite memories include some weekend trips to Kings Island, one of the closer amusement parks. The kids faces light up as the roller coasters come into view as we are driving in. Mariah is also a huge fan of sandy white beaches, so Florida is a hot spot for our family vacations. The beach is always a blast with swimming, finding seashells, and trying to make big sand castles before the tide comes in and fills up our moat. Kinley was very excited for her first Disney trip last year, and we have plans to head out there again as soon as Judah is ready to experience the magic!

What We will Teach Our Children

Above all we hope to teach our children the good news of the gospel. We believe God is a loving God who cares for us and shows us how to love others. Our faith in God is the foundation of our marriage and our home. A good education, strong work ethic, self-confidence, and a compassionate heart are all priorities, and it is our faith in God that helps us grow.

Our Relationship with You

Ultimately, we want you to know that we will be open with your child about their adoption story, and we would love to find ways to include you in this journey as well. We have always raised Kinley to know how loved she is by her birth mom, and we have several great children’s books about adoption that we read to both of the kids. We have an especially close relationship with Judah’s birth mom, and we communicate regularly with her. Mariah sends pictures and information to her about Judah, and they chat or even facetime to share how he is growing and developing. We have had one visit with his mom so far and hope for more in the future. Kinley is so excited to have another sibling, and all of the kids will grow up together united by their adoption stories.

Our Day-to Day Plans

We are very blessed that Mariah is already a stay-at-home parent to Kinley and Judah, and she has previous experience as a third and fourth grade teacher. The day-to-day plans for the first couple months after bringing another child into our home will mostly be focused on staying at home and spending quality time together. Then we will start going to more parks, public activities, and visiting family and friends. Mariah, Kinley, and Judah really enjoy checking out area parks, nature centers, and children’s museums, and Matt often has the flexibility with work to join us on several of these trips. These learning experiences will make great field trips in the years to come when we plan on homeschooling the kids and getting involved in our local homeschooling community. This group helps us provide our children with a quality education, co-op classes, as well as a variety of extracurricular activities.

Our Traditions

One thing we love about living in the Midwest is the changing of seasons. It’s so hard to pick a favorite! In the fall we love the changing leaves, crisp cool air, all things pumpkin, campfires, s’mores, and the list goes on!  Every fall we go to a tree farm that is close to our town and we spend the whole day exploring their fun activities, going through the corn maze, and eating their famous apple cinnamon donuts!  The kids love playing in the corn crib and just digging through corn kernels with different tools. The highlight of last year for Kinley was going on a pony ride for the first time!

Springtime is also beautiful as we see the budding trees and green grass come to life. Easter is a definite highlight within Matt’s family. His parents have so much wooded land that an Easter egg hunt is a true adventure. I’m not sure who enjoys it more, the kids or grandparents! Eggs are hidden in easy to find spots on the lawn and around the playset for the younger kids and the older kids are challenged by those hidden in the trees and bushes in the woods.  You never know if your egg will simply contain candy, some coins, or even a little poker chip indicating a prize to be claimed at the end (usually a collection of stuffed animals).
