From Us to You

Dear Expectant Parent,

Greetings from Italy. We hope that this letter gives you some insight as to what we are like. We can’t claim to understand your situation, and our hearts go out to you at this time as you are faced with difficult decisions and the emotional challenges that accompany those decisions. Our prayers are that you will have peace in your life. We are excited about adoption and want nothing more than to expand our family.

Now, for a little bit about us. We met while we were both in the Army, studying the Chinese language for our future careers. We dated for about 8 months before we decided to get engaged. We were married on a beautiful July morning in Britta’s grandparent’s backyard, 16 years ago. Chris is still in the military, while Britta stays home with the children.

We have four beautiful children. Taiten is 17, Kaia is 14, Koa is 12, and Callum is 2. Adoption became part of our lives when we welcomed Koa to our family through adoption. We definitely love boys, we love our three boys so much! We just really want a girl this time! Our daughter has been the only girl in the entire extended family. She is the only granddaughter, as such she has been so spoiled by the grandparents! She wants a sister so badly and we want another daughter so much! And so do the grandparents!

We both stay active with work and leisure activities. Chris has the good fortune of working in his dream job as a Foreign Area Officer for the US Army, and Britta gets the amazing job of being a stay-at-home, home schooling mom. She also takes college classes in her spare time, ongoing education is a passion of hers. We are currently stationed in Italy, and when Chris retires in a few years, we will settle down somewhere with lots of trees and nature for our family to enjoy.

It’s hard to express how grateful we are that you are considering us for your baby’s family. It’s crazy how much you can ache for and love someone that you haven’t even met yet, and we know that our family will not be complete until she joins our family. We are so grateful that you have taken the time to read about our family. If you have any questions, we are happy to answer them. We understand what a hard decision this is and we are grateful to have this chance.

Thank you,
Chris and Britta

Why We Are Choosing to Adopt

We feel like someone is missing in our family and we feel like adoption is the way we need to achieve that. We were blessed with 2 beautiful children before we had the wonderful opportunity to adopt our third child. He has brought a lot of joy into our home. We were blessed with another little boy after many years of hoping and praying. He has brought joy to all our hearts. Still, we all feel like there is a little girl that is needing us as much as we need her. Our family is not yet complete, and we will never stop searching until we find our sweet little girl.

About Us

We know that it is a huge decision trying to find the perfect family for your child, so we want to tell you a bit more about us, and hope it will help to make your decision a little bit easier for you.

My name is Britta, I get to have the wonderful job of being a stay- at- home-mom. As well as teaching the children through homeschooling, I am also a college student.  I believe in lifelong learning!  I am a certified yoga teacher and my favorite class to teach is to preschool aged children.  Staying home with the children is the most fulfilling job I have ever done. I cannot think of a better way to learn patience than to dealing with the daily grind of running a household, and the constant care that children require. There is no better way to show your family that you love them, than by serving them. Being a stay-at-home-mom has helped me to love more deeply, and helps me give each child the one-on-one attention that is needed, especially in a big family. It is a top priority that none of my children feel like I don’t have time for them. I am so grateful that this is a top priority for Chris as well.

Chris is a hard worker at work and at home. He loves his job and is grateful to be serving in the military. When he gets home, he gives his family one hundred percent of what he has to give, whether it’s a repair that we need the most or help with homework or quality time, he is in the thick of it all right along with me. I believe with my whole heart that his love and devotion are what keeps things working so well with this family. He is willing to let me have a break when he gets home from work if I had a hard day, take the children out individually for some one-on-one time with him, or join in the fun. He is able to see what the need is and doesn’t hesitate to do it.

Our Children

Taiten is our oldest at 17 years old.   He is an amazing reader, we counted once, and he averages 6,000 pages read every month!  He loves science, and hopes to study bugs, with a specialty in ants, in college.  He worked hard to graduate high school at 16 years old.  He currently lives at home and is enrolled in college.

Kaia is 14 and is our only daughter, and she is so anxious and excited to have a little sister. She is so loving and nurturing and is always a big help to me. She also is a strong reader and loves to curl up with a good book. Her favorite thing is horses, she has been riding for 8 years.  We don’t always have access to lessons, but we make sure she has the chance to ride horses as often as we can.  She loves sewing, storytelling, and art, and is by far the most creative child.

Koa is 12, and came to our family through adoption. When we see him, we are so grateful for the blessing of adoption. He has brought a lot of joy into our home. He is always amazing us with how smart and ambitious he is. He wants to be an inventor and has several really cool ideas so far. He is a math and science wiz and full of so much energy.  He loves to be happy, and is quick to laugh.  He recently found a love for origami and has even invented some new folds of his own.

Callum is our sweet little guy, who just turned 2 years old. He is a blessing that we were not sure that we would ever get. We struggled to get pregnant since Kaia, and were seriously doubting that it would ever happen again for us. We cherish him so much. He loves to sing and dance, and have stories read to him. He is learning sign language and loves all things boy! Trucks, tools, dinosaurs, and more.  He has a baby doll that he loves to hold and wrap up in a blanket.  We cannot wait to for him to have a little sibling to grow up with after his big siblings grow up.

Adoption in Our Lives

We had the privilege of adopting Koa from an orphanage in China. He has a closed adoption because his birth family is unknown. We do what we can to preserve his culture, and we have had him DNA tested in case anyone from his birth family ever matches.  We believe it is important for a child to know where they come from.  Our son loves learning about Chinese culture and traditions. We know there are many different levels of open adoption and we are open to discussing what our relationship with you could look like.

Lifestyle

Our lifestyle is a fun one for us. We are a military family so we get to move around the world and see new places often. This is something that has helped our children to be able to make friends more easily because they get lots of practice. We love having friends all around the world. Our children are homeschooled because we wanted to make sure that when we moved, they did not fall behind or skip anything if their new school was behind or ahead of what they have already learned. When we move to a new location, we begin searching for fun activities that our children can participate in so they can make friends as soon as possible and that helps them to adjust to the move more quickly. We love to spend time together doing anything we can, from a family movie night to our many hiking adventures in the outdoors. We travel every chance we get and have explored much of the US as well as many nations abroad. Church is a big help with this too. We are a religious family and our children have loved and embraced religion too.

Life in Italy is more laid back and slow paced than in the United States, which is a breath of fresh air for us!  Every day, we are greeted by fields and farmers on their tractors doing their work.  For exercise, we walk through these fields every day and the neighbors always stop to say “Ciao!”  Within a few kilometers of walking, we see chickens, cows, and alpacas.  Italy is full of songbirds which are lovely to hear along our walks.  Our neighbors grow vegetables, seed corn, wheat, and flowers.  It’s common to hear children playing outdoors.

Buying groceries is a different experience here as it’s common to stop at a bread store, a produce store, and a meat store, instead of everything being found in one location.  Traditional grocery stores also exist here, but the food at the specialty stores is more fresh and delicious.

Within two hours of driving from our house, we can reach two zoos, multiple lakes, the Adriatic Sea, many castles, the mountains, a thousand churches, many hikes, and the most beautiful historic towns and cities.  Within a few hours of driving, we can reach France, Germany, Croatia, Switzerland, and more!  We feel so blessed to live in a place where we are so close to many cultures and adventures.

Cultural Diversity

We are both Caucasian. We adopted our son, Koa, from China, and our other three children are ours biologically. We are not exactly sure what race our next child will end up being, but we can tell you that she will be loved no matter what. We will create a home where any child from any race will feel completely loved, safe, and at home with us.

Home & Neighborhood

We feel blessed to live in one of the most beautiful areas in Italy!  We live in the countryside, about 15 minutes away from the nearest large city.  We have a few neighbors, and it’s generally a quiet street.  In springtime, our view is a field with thousands of poppies all blooming at the same time.  There is an alpaca farm near us and it’s fun to watch the baby alpacas run around and play.

Our house has five bedrooms, two large living rooms, a beautiful spiral staircase, and a nice kitchen.  We have patio areas on two sides of the house, and we spend a fair amount of time outside together.  There is a canal that passes right by us, so we always have the beautiful sound of running water.

Our town is small and safe, with a population of only a few thousand.  We are close to large metropolitan areas, but we have the peace of the country as well.  We have the best of both worlds.  This area is family oriented with plenty to see and do.  We especially love being outdoors and going on adventures.  The locals love children and always stop to say “Ciao!” to our little ones when we are out on walks.  Children are loved and valued in Italy and that is one of the things we love about living here.

Our Families & Friends

Britta’s family is mostly located in the Pacific Northwest. Chris’ family is spaced out across the entire US. Britta has two brothers and two half-sisters. Chris has two brothers. Together we have 15 nieces and nephews! We hope to add to that number with another child of our own to join the crazy cousin crew!

Our children also have wonderful grandparents who love to visit and send letters and cards often. Our family is blessed to be close-knit and very loving.

As a military family we have the unique opportunity to meet people all over the world. We are currently stationed in Italy. We have many close friendships around the entire United States. We love to travel to visit our friends and often welcome friends into our home. Our children have best friends in Washington, Utah, Texas and North Carolina!

Our Faith

We belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and we are active in our faith.  Some of our basic beliefs are:  We believe in God and that Jesus Christ is our Savior and Redeemer.  We believe that all are children of God and are loved beyond measure.  We believe that the purpose of life is to learn, grow, and find joy!  We raise our children with faith in Christ, and they are also active in the church, but we recognize that one day they may choose their own belief systems, and we will love them and support them regardless of what they choose.

Family Traditions

We love celebrating all the major holidays.  Some years we get to be close to extended family while other years we get to do our own holiday traditions with just us where we create memories together. We do our best to make sure our traditions are things that bring us closer together as a family.  We are always trying to create activities that help the children see one another’s strengths. Sometimes it is easy to get irritated with your siblings, but it has been a priority of ours to help them become great friends with one another because when we move we have to rely on those friendships we have in one another until we can make more wherever we end up.  A few things our children enjoy doing together are hiking, board games, and art projects.

Our Promise to You

We will always speak kindly of you in our home.  We will tell your child how loved they have always been and always will be. We will tell them they are part of our family forever.  You will always be the beginning chapter of this baby’s life and we will share that part of the story with reverence and love.  Birth culture is important to us and we will pass on any stories or traditions you wish to share with us.  We have brought Chinese traditions into our home and our lives have been enriched by it, we will do the same for your baby.  We will support your child in all their goals, no matter what they are.  In our family we have a science enthusiast, a horse fanatic, and a runner!  Everyone gets to discover their passion and go for it!  We also have a toddler who is still discovering his favorite things! We promise to provide the most beautiful life for your child that we can.
