From Us to You

Hello,

Thank you for considering our family. We have a great respect for the amount of love, courage and selflessness it takes for you to choose to make a plan for adoption. It is humbling to even ask for the honor and privilege to raise your child, but we consider it just that and do not take any of this lightly.

We have had the joy of birthing 3 biological boys. We treasure each of them. They are goofy, fun, smart and kind. We have been trying to adopt for a long time through different programs, but we have experienced a lot of loss in adding to our family. We were at the top of a wait list for a child/children for an international adoption when they closed the country. Then we experienced 2 miscarriages before we got pregnant with our 3rd son. After he was born, we thought we would be able to adopt a family member’s child but it fell through as well. While we will never fully understand what you’re going through, these losses give us a great compassion and respect for the difficult choice you are making. We have a lot of love to go around and would like nothing more than to pour that into your child.

We know that this is not an easy decision, and it is riddled with heartache. If we can love and support you in this journey we would be happy to do that. We, as a family, are committed to loving people well and that would include you. We want you to always have peace about the decision you make and would love to send pictures, share phone calls or visits. If we can help you have peace and comfort with your decision, we want to do that.

We will love, protect, and cherish your child. We will empower them to reach for their dreams, support them and teach them to be kind and caring and they will know a kind and loving God. They will belong and be spoiled as the baby of the family. Your child will have parents, 3 big brothers, grandparents and friends (who are more like family) who will love them intensely and wildly.

We love to spend time together as a family, whether that is on a neighborhood walk with the dogs, visiting the local aquarium, snuggled up on the couch watching a movie while hiding from a snow storm or traveling to explore or see family. We can’t wait to take your child with us on our journeys to Disney, Hawaii and the south to visit family and anywhere else that we might find ourselves.

When we asked our 3 boys what they would want you to know about our family they said to tell you that we are special. We love to spend time together and we love our dogs and we like to just hang out and we love Disneyland. They also want you know to know that they are really excited to have another sibling to love and swing with in the hammock swings in the backyard.

Love,
Mike and Laura

About Laura

Laura is the best mom, wife, and friend. I feel so lucky every day to be walking through life with her! She is the warmest, most emotionally connected, and most compassionate person that I have ever met. She loves people passionately with her entire being, and she does it unconditionally. Whenever someone is hurting she sees beyond the hurt, to the core of the issue, and is able to nurture in a way that brings us all hope and peace. Laura centers and grounds our family, because she is able to look beyond whatever is happening that day and remind us all of the bigger picture. Not only is Laura a great mentor to other women in our church, she is giving our kids the emotional tools they need to navigate life. This world is a crazy place, but Laura is going to make sure that our children are able to wade through whatever life throws at them. Some of the things that I love about Laura the most are that she laughs at my jokes, even the dad jokes :), she is the one person that I can talk about anything with, and she uses her creative gifts to make sure there is a lot of fun in our family.

About Mike

Mike has the best laugh and the best sense of humor. I think that is what draws so many people to him. It’s also my favorite thing about him. You can always count on him to lighten the mood and add humor to what is either a hard situation or just the day-to-day of life, we laugh a lot. He is a loyal friend and always willing to help someone when they need him. Mike works from home, which gives him the ability to pop out to help with kids or eat lunch with the family and the kids always look forward to his work breaks. Mike is a great dad, loves his kids fiercely and is constantly finding activities to do with them. He loves to take them camping in the summer, to throw a football around the yard or go on bike rides on the local trail. Mike is my safe place in this world and I know that the boys and I all feel more loved and accepted with him around.

Our Family and Friends

We live just 15 minutes from Laura’s mom and step-dad, otherwise known as Grandma and Papa. Grandma and Papa come and spend lots of time with our kids. They love each other and we cannot keep them apart and we don’t want to. Grandma loves to have a Christmas party with just the grandkids and it’s such a special time for all of them.

Our best friends Matt and Niki, aka Uncle Matt and Auntie Kiki, have been our friends for over 20 years. They built their family of 6 kids through adoption and have been a big support to us on the journey to add to our family through adoption. Niki has even written a book about adoption. We are very connected to our church community and love to involve our kids in serving our community through our church. Recently the boys all helped as we packed meal kits to be sent to communities around the world. Our church community is much like family to us.

Why We are Choosing to Adopt

Laura has wanted to adopt since she was a kid. She loves kids and something about adoption has always drawn her. It was contagious and Mike picked up the longing to add to our family through adoption. When we had our 3rd son, Laura had a hard time recovering from the pregnancy. We wanted him to have a sibling closer in age, so we knew it was time to revisit adoption. Despite the many ups and downs that we have experienced in the area of adoption, we are still committed to it. After being licensed foster parents for the last year and a half, we know just how easy it is to love a child that doesn’t share our DNA and we can’t wait to add another little to our crew.

Our Home

We built what we called our “dream home for now” in 2011. It has become our dream home forever. We love our home. We live in a 4 bedroom, 3.5 bath house. We have an unfinished basement and we all love to dream about what it could become. The boys hope it becomes a movie theater. We have a great backyard with hammock swings that our kids all love, a fire pit that really should just be called a “s’mores maker,” a cozy outdoor couch and lots of grass to play catch or run around. We live in a growing neighborhood just minutes from a regional trail that runs along the river and there are many parks. A new park just went in with a splash pad and lots of swings and slides. Our big boys love to ride their bikes around the neighborhood and play basketball out front with the many neighbor kids.

About Us

We met at church while we were in college. We knew of each other, but didn’t really know each other until one day when Laura’s roommates decided to visit Mike and his roommates. Mike was in the kitchen doing dishes when the girls arrived and Laura decided to put her money on the guy doing dishes and jumped in to help. We have been a great team ever since. We approach life very much in this way, as a team. We would rather do things together even if it isn’t always the most efficient way. Life isn’t perfect and neither are the people who live it. We have had some tough roads in our marriage, but we have grown so much and love and support each other and trust God to teach us how to love each other and our kids better every day.

Our Lifestyle

We have created a warm and welcoming home which means we love to be there. If we aren’t taking the dogs on a walk, playing in a neighborhood park or visiting friends or family, we are at home. We enjoy playing board games, watching movies, baking new recipes or reading. We are also active in our local church so you can find us or our kids attending small groups, youth group or Sunday services. Our home is often the gathering place for all our local family to join us for holidays or birthdays. Aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents are often found gathered around a table full of goodies as we celebrate.

Our Dogs, Lucy & Ruby

We have two dogs. Lucy is our 6-year-old Yorkie Poodle. She is 8 pounds of love and fun. We joke that she is part cat as she can be independent and loves to walk along the back of the sofa like a cat. She even has a favorite spot to curl up on the back of the couch. We just recently added Ruby to our family. Mike has dreamed of owning a German shepherd and finally saw that dream realized when we found Ruby. She is a sweet dog and highly intelligent and we all look forward to figuring what kind of tricks we can teach her.

Vacations

We love to travel! Laura’s nickname as a child was “Bye-Bye Girl” because she loved to go places. Our kids have picked up this same love to go places. We love to visit our extended family. We both have family in the Carolinas and Laura has family in Hawaii. These are, of course, some of our favorite places to visit. One of our most favorite places to visit is Disneyland. We love to plan these trips almost annually, as Mike and I are just big kids at heart. We get to visit the Seattle area often and have created many memories from our quick road trip adventures across the state.

Cultural Diversity

We believe it is important to know where you come from and to know your culture. We are prepared to help your child experience their heritage in whatever way makes sense to help them gain a sense of positive identity. We love to travel, and if possible would embrace an opportunity to use travel to help bring exposure to your child’s heritage. Our family has many different cultures. Laura is Portuguese and Native American, our nieces and nephew are Filipino and Korean, and we have cousins of Hispanic and Hawaiian ethnicity.

Our Family Traditions

Laura’s family is from Hawaii, and in her family that means 1st birthdays are a big party. We look forward to showering your baby with all kinds of love, attention and fun for this special birthday. Laura loves to bake birthday cakes, so she bakes them for every birthday. We love Christmas! We always take pictures with Santa and hang it on the Christmas tree in an ornament. Christmas Eve we open one present and it’s always pajamas, a book and a favorite candy. We have lots of Christmas books that we put beneath the tree until Christmas Eve when they get replaced with presents. Christmas day is spent with all our local family.

Our Careers

Laura has what she calls “hobby jobs.” She teaches yoga at two local studios. She also is a singer/songwriter and is currently working to release 3 new songs. Laura was recently asked to help creatively on a film project. If you can’t tell, Laura loves to create and it is an integral part of who she is.

Mike works as an Energy Engineer/Program developer. The short description for his job is he is saving the planet by saving energy in big buildings. He loves what he does and is great at it.

Together we enjoy working with couples in our church. Marriage can be hard and having had our own struggles, we love to give out of what we have learned and the things God has taught us along the way.

Our Promises to You

We believe that one of the best things for children who are adopted is to know where they came from and who their birth family is. We will speak highly about you to your child, and we will especially highlight the bravery and courage it took for you to make a plan for adoption. We are also open to talking this through with you and making sure that we are in alignment with your wishes. As with any important discussion we make about our children we will seek out wisdom from those more experienced than us of what to say and how to say it as the child grows and matures.

Our promise to you is that we are open to relationships with you and between you and your child. Your child will be massively loved in ways that are meaningful to them. We will seek to understand your child, encourage them, and help them grow in every way. We believe deeply that we impart who we are to those around us. Our family is full of love, peace, excitement, and adventure and we will pass these qualities on to your child.
