From Us to You

First and foremost, we want to acknowledge your bravery in the choice you are making. We can only imagine how difficult this time and process may be for you, and we admire your courage and strength. We appreciate that you are taking the time to consider us as parents to your precious child. Our home is a place filled with laughter, curiosity, encouragement, warmth, safety, and unconditional love. Your child will be provided with as many opportunities as possible for them to explore all the things they are interested in, to live a happy, balanced life, and to become the very best person they can be. Your child will know and understand just how important and loved they are each and every day. If you were to choose us to receive your incredible gift, you would forever hold a special place in our hearts and our family.

Your child will become a much-loved member of our large and extended family that spans the globe. We were both born and raised in Australia, which is where your child has 4 very excited and loving grandparents awaiting their arrival! Our parents visit us here in Michigan at least every other year and when they don’t come to us, we visit Australia for our yearly vacation. Your child will also become the youngest of their 5 Aussie cousins who are looking forward to welcoming another playmate! Here in the US your child has an Australian born uncle, aunt and cousin who are eager to welcome them into the family and teach them all about Michigan and the amazing activities we get to do together in the sun and the snow! We also have extended family in Europe, including many second cousins who they will get to visit with in years to come. We both love to travel and will give your child the gift of the world as we continue to explore new countries and cultures as a family for vacations.

Additionally, we have many friends here in Michigan, and indeed all over the US and abroad who we consider part of our extended family, and whose children will eagerly play hide-and-seek or just sit quietly and color with their new, life-long friend.

As much as we love to travel, Michigan is our forever home and we have fully renovated our home from top to bottom so that it’s just the way we like it! We chose Michigan because there’s always something fantastic to do as a family in any season. Summer for us means family barbecues and get togethers, camping, kayaking or boating. Fall brings about spectacular forest walks, family visits to the cider mills for warm cinnamon donuts and hay rides. Winter in our home-town is a truly magical time as the downtown Christmas lights herald the arrival of snowy walks and making snow people and snow angels. Spring is truly spectacular as the snow melts and the plants awaken from their slumber. Our backyard in the spring becomes our subdivision’s ‘baby-deer day care’ and we often have two or three fawns sleeping the day away among our shrubs and trees.

We chose our quiet, leafy subdivision for its proximity to our local parks and quaint downtown. Our sub attracts many young families as our school district is among the best in the state. There are lots of children living on our street and our sub who love to play and ride bikes in our safe and quiet streets – and – a few of them have even cat-sat for us on occasion and drop by just to pet Boris and Yelena.

We are so looking forward to being able to share our lives with your child as they grow and learn about the world around them. Our love for your child is already growing in our hearts which are almost bursting with hope, affection and appreciation for you.

Why We are Choosing to Adopt

We were both fortunate to have had fantastic career opportunities early in our lives and we worked hard to reach our individual career goals. Life moves fast, so fast that sometimes you can’t do all the things you want to do, and by the time we knew we were each other’s ‘person’ we were of an age that made it challenging for us to conceive our own child.

We accepted that our timing in regard to having our own family naturally was off and continued to live our life together to the fullest. We traveled together around Australia and even around the world, eventually accepting an offer to move to Michigan permanently.

Living in the US has resurfaced our desire to have a family as we’ve settled in and built our lives in our new home and community. We know that now is our time to complete our family through adoption. We have wonderful lives and careers, and now it’s time to grow our family and share our successes and our lives with a precious little one.

About Glenn

Glenn is one of the most intelligent people I know. His brain was definitely something that attracted me to him right from the very start. That, and his curly dark hair and bluest of blue eyes! Glenn is very serious about his work and is respected by all who work with him, but he also has a fun and playful side which is always ‘switched on’ and ready to go! He is a great collector of things he loves, and his Lego collection is ENORMOUS! Lego is certainly one of his greatest loves and he’s been collecting and building it his entire life. I also know that he’s just itching to be able to share his obsession with another little builder.

I learned very quickly that Glenn loves to work with his hands, and as a result, I’ve benefited from his handy-work many times (including two brand new bathrooms which he renovated from top to bottom by himself!). He also has a green-thumb and can grow just about anything! It’s almost embarrassing to say how good Glenn is at so many things – but it’s the truth – and I am so grateful every day that he chose to spend his life with me.

About Tonia

Tonia is my best friend. She always makes me a better person, which I guess is what teachers do. She is intelligent and thoughtful and her happiness and sense of calm are contagious, not just to me, but to everyone. Being a teacher, she has a natural ability to help people not just learn, but to grow. She is the person her family, friends and especially I, look to to help us through any challenging situation. Tonia can cook just about anything, and has somehow even got me to cook something more than ramen noodles too! She loves to try new foods, listen to all sorts of music and has an appreciation for life like no-one else I know. She also has an amazing ability to connect with children who take to her so naturally, as well as the subtle ability to correct people’s spelling and grammar, and they don’t even realize it! I often joke with my mates that ‘my wife is better than yours’, but I really mean it because in my eyes, she’s just wonderful.

Our Families

Our family is spread across the world, both here in the USA and in Australia. But even though the distance is great, we are close. We share the ups and downs of life and always talk about our adventures here in the US.

We have lots of friends locally, nationally and internationally. Many Australian families made the move to the US at about the same time we did and we’ve bonded to create a close network of friends who can be relied upon at any time for any reason (even for a place to stay when the power goes out unexpectedly!). We also have lots of American friends here in Michigan and from all over the US, who we celebrate both American and Australian traditions with.

Our Home

Our home is in a quiet, tree filled subdivision in Michigan. We have one of the largest back-yards in the subdivision with lots of big trees and a sprawling lawn. We love the critters and birds that live around our home, and regularly have a small herd of deer sleeping under our trees. Our favorite deer is named Rebecca (named by the local kids), and she usually has 1 or 2 fawns each year, which she raises in our backyard.

Our home is large but cozy, and we have spent lots of time renovating and updating. We have a new kitchen, bathrooms and laundry room (all which Glenn renovated himself!). Our favorite room is our music listening room which now has a new fireplace where we often sit and listen to music together with our two cats, Boris and Yelena.

Our neighborhood has many families both young and old, and there are always children out playing and people walking their dogs. It’s a beautiful place to be and our home is where our heart is.

About Us

We asked some of our friends how they would describe us as a couple and they first came up with words like hard-working, stable, sensible and committed. Then we asked them to be real and words like; hilarious, goofy, adventurous and sharing were thrown out. We are so proud of how hard we’ve worked to be where we are and of who we have become as a couple over the years. Our lives, like most people’s, have not been without challenges and struggles, but those times have only made us more resilient and stronger together. We are that couple who actually like each other and each other’s company! We appreciate, accept and love each other for who we are – good, bad or goofy!

Our Fur-Babies

Our fur-babies, Boris and Yelena are Russian Blue’s (cats) who love to play with us and each other, and to talk – a lot! They made the journey from Australia to the US with us, and are a very important part of our family. Yelena chose Glenn as her human and can usually be found sleeping on her cushion on his desk during the day while he is working, and cuddles with him at night. She loves treats and she (and Boris) have been trained to sit and shake for them! Tonia is Boris’ human and his daytime spot of choice in Tonia’s office. He is our gentle ‘guard cat’ and is the first to hear when there’s someone at the door or when there’s a deer in the yard. He is an intelligent and playful boy who plays fetch, and loves cuddles (with anyone), but also has funny moments where he chases his tail. He is our cat-dog or our “coggy”! Both of our cats are gentle and cuddly and anyone who meets them just loves them – even if they’re not cat people.

How We Met

We have Tonia’s brother to thank for our first meeting – however neither of us had a clue that we’d end up getting married! Glenn went to college with Tonia’s brother and we first met at his house-warming party when we were both fresh out of school, right when our respective careers were taking off. Although we were attracted to one another, we were both seeing other people at the time and so the timing wasn’t right. Instead, we became great friends. We didn’t become romantically attached until years later when we couldn’t deny the fact that we were meant to be together. So, after several years of unfulfilling relationships, we decided to give us a go. The rest is history (as the cliche goes), but anyone who spends time with us can tell right away that we were meant to be. It just took us a while to realize it!

Our Traditions

Our Christmas tradition is to always put up the Christmas tree together on December 1st. We have a large collection of ornaments and each year we pick a different “theme” to decorate the tree. One year will be Disney ornaments that we have collected on our trips to Disneyland while the next year will be birds and traditional ornaments. We have family here in Michigan and so we’re lucky enough to be able to spend Christmas with them, as well as with our friends.

Thanksgiving week is a special time for us and we celebrate it in our own special way. We were married in late November and so our wedding anniversary often falls on or about the day of Thanksgiving. To celebrate both occasions we cook Australian lamb and roast veggies, and enjoy a nice bottle of Australian red wine.

We’ve also come to love celebrating Independence Day and love to join in the festivities of the holiday. Our county and the surrounding counties each put on amazing fireworks displays which we enjoy with our friends and family.

Our Vacations and Leisure Time

We love to travel. Near, far and all over the world! Our leisure time in Michigan looks very much like most people we know – lots of barbecues with friends and family and time out on the water. We also love to go to baseball games and walk the trails in our beautiful Michigan parks.

The US is an amazing place to explore and we make the most of any opportunity to get out and about. We will road-trip or fly to explore interesting new destinations, with just a few of our favorite places to visit being Arizona (we love the cacti and the mountains), Washington DC (so many museums, so little time!) and California. We are also both Disney nuts and have been to each of the Disney parks more times than anyone really deserves. Our quiet, down-time at home includes spending time together listening to or playing music, reading, cooking and sitting around our fire-pit making s’mores with our niece.

Our Hobbies

Glenn loves to make and create just about anything! He collects and builds Lego and lately has been into making model cars and planes. He’s also done the majority of our home improvements which has been an incredibly satisfying hobby for the last few years. He plays the guitar and loves to spend time with Tonia listening to music in front of the fire.

Tonia’s hobbies include cooking, reading and learning (unsuccessfully) how to crochet. She’s been branching out into baking and has recently learned how to make creme brulee! Listening to music with Glenn is one of her favorite things to do on rainy or snowy afternoons.

Together we enjoy the great outdoors; kayaking, walking on park trails and bike riding. When we’re house-bound because of the snow we dig out one of our many, many board games, card games, trivia games or even old school video games that we love to play together!

Education

Having the opportunity and access to receive a quality education is incredibly important to both of us. We know that in our current society, knowledge and life-skills are essential elements for building a fulfilling and productive life. We have both been fortunate to have had the opportunity to attend college and obtain advanced degrees (which were the pathways we chose for ourselves), however we also know that we wouldn’t be where we are today without experiencing the lessons life has also taught us.

We believe that every person has their own strengths, and that when possible, we should be provided with and take every opportunity to explore our natural abilities and talents. This is what we hope to be able to provide for our own child: the opportunity to be the very best they can be and to learn about themselves and their own special talents so that they can be a fulfilled, balanced and happy individual.

Kind of Parents We will Be

We are both fortunate to have had fantastic role models in our parents. We’ve learned from them how to be supportive, fair and how to love unconditionally. We have discussed at length what kind of parents we want to be, but we also know that we need to be the kind of parent our child needs us to be. If our child is shy, we need to show them how to become confident. If our child is impatient, we need to teach them patience. We can tell you that we plan to be all the things great parents want to be, but we know, and are committed to being the kind of parent your child will need us to be, whatever challenges and triumphs are ahead for us.

Our Lifestyle

We love to travel, but also love to just be at home. Getting out and about for road trips, shopping, discovering new record shops or antique malls, or just new towns. In the warmer months, we take our kayaks out on one of the many lakes all over Michigan.

Sometimes we just like the quiet days at home where we read a book in front of the fire, or listen to music. Music is a big part of our life, from listening to tunes at home to going to concerts, small and large, and even playing music together. Tonia plays the flute (since High School) and Glenn plays the guitar, which he took up as an adult with no musical background!

Work and our careers are important, but we always make time for our life and each other. It’s a balance and a conscious choice that we make for ourselves.

We also both enjoy watching and playing sports. Going to watch baseball and hockey game makes a great day out, as well as throwing the baseball in the backyard. We even got ourselves a couple of special baseball bats at the Louisville Slugger Factory on one of our road trips! We have both represented our country internationally in our respective sports where we’ve made life-long friends.

What We will Teach Your Child

We believe that kids need to be kids, and so we will do all we can to ensure that your child learns the joy and happiness of childhood! We will encourage them to be curious about the world around them and will support them in learning about what interests them. Your child will be immersed in all things music and we hope that they might choose to become musical in their own way, singing or playing music with us. We will teach them patience, independence and how to understand and communicate their own feelings. Above all else, we will teach your child the feeling of security, the joy of laughter and the gift of unconditional love.

What Adoption Means to Us

We have grown together over the years and have created an amazing life. The only thing missing was a little person to share it with. We long to share our good fortune, life-long learning and happiness with a little someone who we can love and care for. Being able to share what we have and what we’ve learned with your child, and to watch them grow, learn and achieve their goals is something that we’ve both dreamed of.

Tonia’s maternal grandmother was adopted and often shared how grateful she was that she was placed with a family who loved her and were able to nurture her natural talents and abilities. We’ve been able to experience first-hand how positive adoption can be to help create the foundations for a fabulous life, and we are hopeful that we might be able to provide the same opportunity for your child.
