From Us to You

Dear Expectant Mother,

We want to thank you for taking the time to review our profile. Our hope is that this will help you to get to know us a little better. We want to thank you for considering an adoption plan for your baby. We know that this is not any easy decision. We admire your bravery and strength of character in considering this option. We know that this choice comes from a heart filled with love for your child and a bright hope for their future. We wish you success in your journey as you thoughtfully consider the best path for your child.

We have always had a hope for children. We have prayed for this day for many years. We have struggled with infertility and were not successful in having a baby with infertility treatments. John is familiar with adoption as he has an adopted sister and nephew. We love having them as a part of our family. We enjoy hearing the stories of how his nephew is growing and changing. However, it is even better when we see each other at family reunions. In thinking about adoption, once again our hope was rekindled. Adoption is a beautiful thing and a blessing to all. We would be honored and privileged to provide a home and family for your baby.

Our home is a loving, nurturing and supportive environment. Our faith in God is important in our lives. We find strength, comfort, and direction from God’s word. We will foster an atmosphere that produces confidence, trust, respect, and good decision making while encouraging dreams and creativity. We like to spend time together. We look forward to sharing some of our favorite activities like hiking, swimming, camping, going to the beach, kayaking, biking, Frisbee golf and playing board games. We both like to be creative in our own ways. Michelle likes crafting making wreaths, painting and refinishing furniture while John likes woodworking and home improvement projects. We work together as a team in a lot of what we do in our home. We make most of our meals at home and delight in trying new things. Cooking is a family tradition for both of us. Michelle spent many hours learning how to make everything from scratch by her mother’s side. She was her mother’s “star helper.” John’s family liked to cook for large gatherings in their home. We have carried this tradition on in our home and enjoy having large gatherings with family and friends. We look forward to being able to pass this on. Let’s not forget Molly. Molly is our family dog. She has never met a stranger and her favorite new friends are always children. She likes to play and be with us in everything we do. She is gentle and loves to give doggy kisses and snuggle. She is just sweet.

We believe that God has a plan for our family and for you. We pray for the right home for your new baby. May God bless you for your selfless and precious gift!

Why We're Choosing to Adopt

We have always had a desire to expand our family. We have many nieces and nephews who we enjoy, but no children of our own. After trying to have children on our own, we sought the help of fertility specialists. We tried several different options but were not able to conceive. We decided to give it a break and think about how to proceed from here. A few months later, Michelle did get pregnant but she had a miscarriage. It had been many years and Michelle was not able to get pregnant again. John’s brother went through the process of adoption and we began to think about adoption as an option. The more we thought and learned about it, the more interested we became. Perhaps, we could expand our family after all. We liked the idea of giving a home to a child and creating an opportunity for a better life. We are excited about raising a family. We look forward to being chosen for this opportunity to begin an exciting new chapter in our journey together.

About Michelle

After meeting Michelle, I felt comfortable being around her, in part, because she was easy to talk to. In a short period of time it was as if we had known each other for much longer.

We complement each other in many ways in that she is good at things I am not and vise versa. For instance, she notices details and can implement them in the projects that I undertake. I am not interested in cooking, but she makes very tasty meals and never seems to run out of new ideas. Things are done right and really turn out well with her involvement. She is very kind towards others by baking them things from time to time or expressing her sentiments with a hand written card. She is very intuitive and can see what is needed a lot of times when it comes down to it. Suffice it to say, she is very intelligent, compassionate and goes the extra mile to show appreciation to others.

Michelle enjoys cooking and is really good at it. Restaurants usually can’t compare to what she can make. She loves the beach and getting to learn about new areas. She is very creative and can see the potential in things. I am amazed at how creative she is in the ways we can make our house a home. Her occupation requires a lot of hard work at a fast pace with many complex details involved. I admire her abilities to do what she does. I admire her greatly and am grateful to be part of her life.

About John

I met John at church one weekend. He found out that I was raised in his home town and this is how it began. John is a sweet and caring person. He is easy to talk to. We felt at home with each other and hit it off right away. He has a playful side. He enjoys leisure time and activities whether it is golf, mountain biking or just playing board games together. Once he starts a task, he likes to get it done. He is a hard worker. He is creative and enjoys building and making things. Some of his projects have included building a screened in gazebo/deck, kitchen island and most recently planter boxes for the our back yard. He does many things like this that help make our house a home. Despite all this rough manly stuff, he is also very gentle and tender. Molly trusts only him to cut her fingernails. He is always quick to jump in and help out, in whatever is going on, whether it is cooking and meal prep or just folding laundry. He is loyal, a great companion and my best friend!

Our Home

We live in a home that offers 4 bedrooms and 3 full baths in a large subdivision. We love living close to the city, but having some open areas to roam. Our backyard is large by most standards and allows room to have a garden, trees and a lot of area to play. We like being able to get outdoors and walk the trail or just walk around the neighborhood.

Our neighborhood is meant for family living. We have miles of trails that run through and beyond our neighborhood. Our neighborhood streets are lined with trees by the sidewalks which makes it nice for walking too. We have two playgrounds and a community pool. We also have a large open field for playing ball, throwing a Frisbee or even flying a kite. The neighbors are friendly and there are a lot of children who live here. They can be found out at the playground, pool or riding their bicycles. There are community events at the pool and in the neighborhood from time to time and we enjoy meeting new neighbors and making new friends.

Our Sweet Pup, Molly

Molly is our family dog. She is a West Highland terrier. These dogs are known for being great family pets. She is gentle, patient, playful, and smart. Molly loves to be a part of everything that we are doing. Her favorite spot to be during the day when John is working is perched on top of the desk next to his lap top. She will sit quietly for hours. She just wants to be near him and look outside through the windows in his office. When we go outside in the yard, Molly likes to run around as fast as her little legs will carry her, constantly looking back hoping that one of us is chasing her. She also likes to go for walks especially on the trail. Just the mention of a “walk” gets her giddy with excitement. Molly also likes to take trips in the car. Her favorite stores are Lowes and Home Depot. She stands up in the cart looking out the front. She whines in protest whenever the cart slows down. She likes to keep it moving. Her favorite recreation spot is the beach. She knows when we are going. From the moment we start pulling out the sunscreen and beach towels, she is following us all over the house. Molly pulls and tugs at the leash when we arrive at the beach. She just can’t wait to get out there. Once we find our spot on the beach, she parks herself in the shade of the umbrella and sticks her nose out in the wind. She is content to stay there and stare out at the waves coming in. She will usually make one trip to the water but after the first wave, she is ready to get out and walk along the water’s edge. She does not seem to mind the sea gulls but is anxious to meet anyone who will be willing to give her attention. Molly does have a little bit of a competitive side. Every night at bed time she likes to race John up the stairs. When she wins, she looks back with a look of satisfaction! Little does she know that he lets her win because it is so cute to see the look on her face. Recently, we had friends over for brunch and their six-year-old daughter disappeared into the sun room with Molly. When John went to check in on them, he found Molly perched up on the sofa with hair ties on each ear and a necklace dangling around her neck. They were having a great time together as Molly was being decorated much like a Christmas tree. It was so funny to see them together. She is truly as sweet as she looks!

Our Families and Friends

Michelle has one brother and two sisters with many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. Her family is spread out across the US. However, her dad and brother with all his children and grandchildren live just a few hours away. John has two sisters and one brother and they live in the West and Midwest with the exception of his oldest sister who lives in Ireland. His parents live out West as well. We travel out West to see them and visit when we can. Family reunions are always fun. His sister periodically comes to visit. She is definitely there for our big family get-togethers. She came and surprised us one year for Thanksgiving.

Michelle’s parents were missionaries serving in Brazil and along the Mexican border so she grew up in a Latin culture speaking Portuguese and Spanish. Her mother passed away two years ago but her father is still living. Her dad finds visiting with his grandchildren and great grandchildren a joy.

John’s parents are like busy bees. They love to be active. They are both retired and love to travel. They have friends everywhere they go. Of course no traveling tour would be complete without visiting their adopted grandson. They love to spend time with him. Their Irish grandchildren are no exception. Sometimes they go see them over there and other times they come to see them out West.

We enjoy having dinner with friends or going to the beach together. We have friends from work, church and neighbors new and old. Some years we have Thanksgiving with our friends when we are unable to travel. We like to go to a nearby lake with friends to hangout, fish, have lunch and just catch up with each other.

How We Met

We met at church one Sunday. Michelle’s mom had recently had surgery and she was living in a different state. John heard this and his ears perked up because Michelle was talking about his home state of Texas. We started talking and discovered that we had both attended the same college. We had many memories we could share. John was easy to talk to and we hit it off right away. In the end, John asked me for Michelle’s phone number. We continued talking over the phone and seeing each other at church. Soon he asked her out to lunch. A short time after that we started dating. We were very comfortable with each other. It felt as if we could talk about anything. A little over a year later, we were married. We have now been married for 13 years.

Our Lifestyle

We have a casual lifestyle. Our home is comfortable but informal and relaxed. We enjoy gathering in our kitchen and living room. Our door is always open to friends and family. We really enjoy new experiences. We enjoy trying new foods and flavors anything Mexican, Chinese, Indian, Italian or Brazilian. We enjoy exploring new places nearby like the many beaches of North Carolina or far away like Ireland. We have fun building and creating, some as a hobby and others as projects over time. For instance, Michelle is painting and restoring a piece of furniture and John has just completed building four raised, garden beds.

We can be home bodies as well. We plant and care for our garden and cook most of our meals at home. We try to eat healthy most of the time with a balanced diet. However, we still make room for having a good burger or pizza. Michelle has a sweet tooth for dark chocolate brownies and John has a weakness for vanilla ice cream with the toppings of the day. We do enjoy going out to dinner from time to time, especially when we are visiting a new place. We like to be active and physical activity is very important to us, so we do exercise regularly. John lifts weights and likes to ride bikes. Michelle likes Zumba and running. Swimming at the neighborhood pool can be a nice relaxing activity. We exercise our faith as well by attending and being involved with our church. Our dog Molly is a part of our activities as much as possible and does have her own routines as well.

Family Traditions

Every Friday evening we make it a point to spend time together. This usually involves making some of our favorites like hamburgers and French fries and perhaps watching a movie.

No alarm clocks on Saturday morning! We like to sleep in a little and get up when we are ready. We hang out together while making brunch. Michelle makes an incredible egg burrito or scrambled egg along with grits and maybe ham. Often, there are some pancakes or muffins to accompany. All three of us (John, Michelle and Molly) sit down and watch animal shows while eating our breakfast.

We attend church Sunday morning and reconnect with other members. We find direction and encouragement in our faith for our daily lives.

Memorial Day weekend is a time where Michelle’s family gathers at the beach. All those who can come are invited to spend the weekend or the whole week. We gather for fun in the sun and in the water. We go shopping at the outlet stores. We have contests and fish. We play putt-putt golf and eat lots of good food! It is a great time to laugh and enjoy each other.

Thanksgiving for us starts with the first signs of fall. Michelle likes to make autumn crafts. We decorate with wreaths and pumpkins. We plant mums in the yard for fall color. Sometimes we cook a full Thanksgiving meal together and invite others to join us. Other times we have Thanksgiving dinner at the house of our friends. Still other times we gather with our family. Thanksgiving is a special time for us as we reflect and feel grateful for the good things God has done.

Christmas at our house is filled with traditions. We decorate the house with Christmas lights and put up the Christmas tree. We give each other a special ornament to commemorate that year. We bake Christmas cookies to share with family and friends. We attend Christmas services at our church. Michelle often sings in the Christmas choir. On Christmas morning Michelle makes Christmas bread from a recipe handed down from her mother. We read the Christmas story together and exchange gifts.

On a Typical, 3-day Weekend

We like to get out of town and take a trip somewhere. Frequently during the summer months, we head out for the beach. The excitement usually starts on Friday night with packing. The next morning we finish up the packing and either take breakfast with us on the road or stop somewhere along the way. If we stop for breakfast, it usually involves waffles with eggs, ham and a side of grits. Yes, grits, we are in the south after all. John usually drives while Michelle navigates trying to make sure that the GPS does not lead us on some wild goose chase in the countryside. We look forward to these times together. The beach is a place for us to just relax in the sand. Michelle loves to listen to the sound of the waves, staring out at the endless different colors of blue in the ocean. Sometimes she will read or paint, along with going in the ocean for a swim. John likes to read magazines or books and take naps along with swimming. Our dog, Molly does not like to be left out. When we can, we take her with us. One of our new things we like to do is stop for Italian submarine sandwiches at our favorite place, Jersey Mike’s. These go great with Cape Cod Potato chips, limeade and chilled watermelon. We take this feast out to the beach and eat lunch there. We like to stay out on the beach until just before dusk, then we pack up and head for the car and it is off to the campground or hotel. We usually go out to dinner which, of course, must involve seafood at least one night. The next morning, we go out to breakfast at a local diner. We may take a walk on the streets near the beach or on the beach itself, and take in the sights of whatever area we are visiting. We like to visit aquariums or historic sites if there is something nearby. In the afternoon we may go shopping and look at some local art. We have our favorite places to go but it is always exciting to discover new places to visit in addition to our regular spot. On day three we usually go out to breakfast and take one last look at the beach as we head toward home.

What Attracted Us to Each Other

I will always remember the first time I saw John. I was new to the church and I had not met a lot of people. As I scanned the room of people, looking for a friendly face, my eyes came to rest on John. I noted that he was quite handsome with brown hair and dimple in his chin. However, I did not think any more of it. We had a class get together for Super Bowl and I saw him there at a distance. He was sitting on a couch surrounded by several ladies. I thought that he might be trouble, perhaps a player, so I decided to steer clear of him. A few weeks later, he came over to talk to me when he found out my mother lived in his home state of Texas. The funny part was that I did not realize that this was the same guy. I was amazed at how well we hit it off. He was so easy to talk to. We found out that we had a lot in common. We believed that our personal relationship with God was the foundation for our own lives and marriage. Our common faith drew us together. We found that we thought the same about a lot of things. John was kind and responsible. He liked to get outside and do things and believed in being healthy. He valued honesty, financial responsibility, integrity, and hard work. We found we made a great team. He wanted and liked the idea of marriage and perhaps a family. These were important to me too.

The first time I locked eyes on Michelle was when she stood in the doorway to the Sunday school class I was in at Church. I remember thinking to myself; “what do we have here?” I tried not to stare but did notice that she seemed tall and may have been attractive. I was trying to behave myself and not make anyone feel uncomfortable. The next time I saw her was at a Super Bowl Party and she was making her rounds at the kitchen table that had been laid out with food. I didn’t want to make a big introduction so I just said hi to her from the other side of the room. There was no response from her so I continued on my way. I eventually ended upstairs on the couch and Michelle was across the room on the floor, seemingly trying to be anti-social. This didn’t seem to be working out for her because soon after, another guy who sometimes visited our Sunday class started talking to her. I found this to be very entertaining as I watched to see what would happen. I found out later that he was trying to impress her with his car and Country Club membership and his interest in playing tennis. The next time I saw Michelle, was at Church in class and she started sharing about being from Texas. There are a lot of beautiful women from Texas and Michelle was representing her state very well. We ended up talking for a good while even as everyone left the room. I asked her for her number at the end of the conversation and she willingly gave it to me even though it was a little much since we hadn’t talked until then. I did call her a little later that day to continue our conversation. The next time we met in class, she sat next to me and I was surprised. Michelle says she didn’t know that I was already going to sit there. What are the chances??? After class, I asked Michelle if she was going with the group to eat lunch and we made plans to go elsewhere and as we were walking away, the other guy who had been taking to Michelle asked if she was going to lunch with the group and she told him she was going to lunch with me. He looked dumbfounded as we walked away. We started seeing each other regularly after that. I felt at ease being around her and knew that she was with me for me, not for other reasons. I found her to really be who she conveyed herself to be; honest, straightforward, and a good, gourmet cook. I enjoyed many nice meals that she made from scratch and best of all, they were healthy and balanced. I learned a lot more about nutrition even though I was trying to eat healthy, home cooked meals. Michelle is very even tempered and I really like that about her.

Our Careers

John – My career path started with my parents. My mom and dad have been involved with buying and selling real-estate for years. I discovered that I have a passion for helping others. I enjoy the process of working with people, helping them to learn and succeed in their goals. I also really enjoy the business world of finance and real-estate. This all works together to make me a realtor who cares about clients and helps them achieve one of their greatest dreams, home ownership. My skills and experience help me to guide clients while avoiding potential issues that would delay or hamper them in buying a home. My job is well done when I find the right home for the right client. I love to hear back from them with stories and pictures of how they are enjoying their new home.

Michelle – My career started with my parents as well. My mother was a nurse and I grew up watching her care for others as a missionary. As I was growing and learning, science became a passion for me, particularly Biology. I took advanced classes in high school which gave me an edge going into college. Learning how the body works and how diseases affect the body, I wanted to help those who were sick. I had the opportunity to go to nursing school, so I tried my hand at it. I found that I really loved working in surgery. I get to help people at their most vulnerable time, while they are sleeping. I also continue to enjoy the science of it as technology is always changing. The way we do surgery today is much different than what we did just ten years ago. I don’t get to hear back from my patients because they don’t remember what happened while they were sleeping. However, it is good to know that I can be there to help them, comfort them, and watch over them all the same.
