Dear Expectant Mom

Dear Expectant Mother,

Thank you for considering me as a mother for your child. I honestly have written this letter in my head so many times, and yet find it difficult to put my feelings into words to tell you that you are the miracle for which I have prayed for nearly 15 years.

While I have a wonderful life, becoming a mother has been one of the most confusing journeys I could have imagined. I began trying to become pregnant almost 15 years ago. After several months of not conceiving naturally, and several conversations with my doctor, I moved to the fertility specialist. That went on for years, and the last attempt led to a conversation that led with the words “selective abortion.” My doctor felt that if I was willing to “put all my eggs in the basket” he could help me achieve pregnancy, but I would have to be willing to selectively abort to give one the best chance to survive. I can’t tell you how much I cried after that conversation. I knew that in spite of my strong desire to become a mother that I could not create life only to end it. In my heart, I knew that part of my journey was over.

I share this with you, because I want you to know that my journey has had times of great confusion and big questions that, in those moments, seemed larger than I could manage. I am sure you have had so many of these confusing and soul-searching conversations on your side of this journey.

Through my challenges, I have many times relied on God’s promise that God’s plan will survive and “Nothing is impossible with God.” The story of Elizabeth is one of my favorites. Elizabeth prayed for her child and when it seemed most unlikely, God blessed her. Right now, through our challenges, you and I are being brought together to be each other’s miracles. You and I have the ability together, to do what neither of us can do alone. I have the ability to provide an amazing life for your child and you have the ability to give life where I could not. You have the ability to be my blessing and I hope that I will be yours.

While this part of my story is an important part of my story, there is so much more to my life. I worked my way through college. I put myself through law school. I have amazing and supportive friends that are great role models. I have an amazing partner who came with the BEST family – Larry was the fulfillment of this very specific prayer. I have a beautiful home in a wonderful neighborhood. I have traveled the U.S. and most of Europe. I get to do fulfilling work with great people and a flexible work schedule that has allowed me to have financial security. While I have faced challenges, I have persisted, worked hard, and created an amazing life that I can’t wait to share with a child. Right now, both of our stories have the possibility to have a happy ending in every way. Just as there are many chapters to my story, there are many chapters in yours and we both have so many left to write.

As I mentioned, I have a wonderful family life. Larry has two adult boys, Lawrence and Robert, and we now have a daughter-in-law, Jaynie. We live in different cities, but are all very close. We get together for most holidays and I make special t-shirts for many of these occasions. The t-shirts have become part of our family tradition, and everyone looks forward to the great t-shirt reveal! I write poems that have each of our names for the t-shirt design and the poems always get a good laugh. This year, Robert and Jaynie had their first baby, so we will have an extra special shirt for this Christmas! Christmas is a special time for us. We celebrate the Feast of the Seven Fishes (an Italian tradition to honor Larry’s mother) and have a huge Christmas Eve feast where we all wear our t-shirts to dinner. On Christmas morning, we all go to church together, then spend the day opening gifts, visiting with family and friends, and playing games. I love doing puzzles and we have a new Christmas puzzle every year. Fourth of July has become another big family occasion since it gives us a chance to make our traditional t-shirts and see each other during the summer! We are so excited to meet your child and continue all of our traditions with him or her!

I look forward to waking up on the weekends, making a big breakfast, and taking family walks. I can’t wait to share my love of the outdoors with your child! As he or she grows, I look forward to traveling to explore this wonderful world together. We will go to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade – what fun it will be to see the colorful floats together. I want to spend rainy days playing games on the floor and teaching your child to love reading and doing crafts. I love to unwind on Friday nights and look forward to pizza and movie nights spent in our pajamas snuggled on the couch. For years, I taught Sunday school and took such joy in watching the children learn the Bible stories and discovering their own relationship with God. I very much believe that every person has special gifts and talents. I can’t wait to see what those will be and look forward to supporting your child’s discovery of their own gifts.

I want you to know that I am already praying for you and know how much courage you have because you are already making tough choices just by engaging in this process. I hope sharing my story has provided you some positive encouragement and has helped you to get to know me at least a little.

I look forward to meeting you and getting to know you. You already hold a special place in my heart. I know you will have questions for me. I look forward to meeting you and telling you more about me and hearing all about you.

Until we meet…
Lisa

Q & A

Q: Tell us about your home and neighborhood.
A: I live in a beautiful, family-friendly neighborhood with tree-lined streets. Our neighborhood has about 600 homes and a central area for gathering that includes a clubhouse, tennis courts, a playground, and a pool with a lifeguard. We have a main street that runs through the center of our neighborhood that has sidewalks. I love walking through the neighborhood on the sidewalk and that is where you can find me most mornings. Every home is on a sizeable lot with lots of trees and grass. It is an idyllic, North Carolina neighborhood made for families with children.

Q: When you have a 3-day weekend, what you like to do?
A: I love to explore. I love the outdoors and am out walking whenever I have free time. I love to hike or go for a ride on my bicycle, and there are so many options within a few short miles from my home. We have the green-way which is a great option for getting out and seeing nature. I also love to golf and many days find myself at the driving range hitting balls. Golf is great exercise and very relaxing. I have family nearby and love to get in the car and go for a visit. They live in Virginia and recently had their first baby. I hope to be able to spend even more time with them and look forward to bringing my child to visit and watch them grow up together.

Q: What do you hope to teach your child(ren)?
A: I am a true believer of living the life you are meant to live. I think each person comes into this world with something unique and special to offer. I want to raise my child to tap into their own gifts and help them grow those gifts to their fullest potential. I also want him or her to know how special they are and that they can do anything they can dream of doing. I believe that how we talk to children shapes who they become. Having someone believe in a child is a powerful thing. I want your child to have the security of knowing how much s/he is loved and supported. I know having this positive encouragement will translate into their ability to move confidently through the world, living his/her best life.

Q: What will you tell your child about his or her birthmom?
A: That his/her birth mom gave me the greatest gift I could have ever received. That because of her, you have life. She was chosen by God to give you life and to bring you into this world. Together, the two of us are your mother – the one who gave you life and who loved and nurtured you in the womb, and the one who raises you and nurtures you as you grow into the person you are meant to be. Both of your mothers pray for you and we will pray for her and thank her for bringing us all together, because without her, none of this would be possible. In addition, I would like to know more about you, the birth mother, so I can pass along information. Does your child have your eyes? Does he or she share her artistic/creative/kind-hearted qualities? These are the things I would like to remind the child about. You are the best part of her and you share her gift of__________.

Q: Are you active in your church? Tell us about your activities.
A: I was very active in my home church in Tennessee. I taught Sunday school to a special-needs child, was on the church advisory council, and was a eucharistic minister. Since moving to North Carolina, we have been in regular attendance but not as active in the volunteer ministry. As I explore being a new parent, I will continue to attend church and plan to have church as a part of our lives. I look forward to finding activities that will foster the child’s love of God and sense of being in a church community.

Q: How will a child enrich your life?
A: I can’t wait to watch a child explore this world. I have always wanted to be a mother and know that my path has led me to this process so I can find the child that is meant to be my child. I look forward to fostering a love of the outdoors and nature in a child. I look forward to fostering a sense of love for others and being part of a community. I look forward to teaching a child wonderful things such as drawing and crafts. As much as I know a child will enrich my life, I can’t wait to enrich a child’s life and give the child love.

Q: Describe your last vacation and/or daytrip.
A: My partner, Larry, and I recently visited Scotland. We have been very fortunate and have been able to travel to a great part of the United States and Europe. I love to travel and think there is no better education than immersing yourself in a culture and seeing how others experience life. Our trip to Scotland was one of our best trips. We spent the majority of our time in historic Edinburgh exploring the historic parts of the city. We toured the underground tunnels and took a historic tour to learn how people lived in the early times of Edinburgh. We visited several castles and took a tour through the highlands. We also spent a day touring St. Andrews fairway, the home of golf, and the old town of St. Andrews. We spent a good bit of time reading about the history of Scotland before our trip and had an amazing time getting to see all of the history come alive as we explored the old cities and countryside.

Q: Will you be returning to work? If so, describe your day-care plans.
A: I will return to work. I have a great job that allows me to have a good life. I have the ability to work from home one day a week. My partner of almost ten years. Larry, stays at home and will provide in-home care. Larry has raised two amazing boys who have both turned out to be amazing adults. I know he will be a great partner in raising your child. I also have a good day care that is in our neighborhood. When the time is right, I plan to use day care two days a week to allow for socialization and learning in a positive environment. I think this is great preparation for school success and will give your child a playgroup of neighborhood children who are his/her age.
