Dear Expectant Mother,
Hello and thank you for reading our letter. We hope we can give you a window into our family and provide you with a sense of who we are. We do not know all of the questions and feelings you have in your heart and mind as you go through this process, but we hope you will find some comfort and answers in our story, and that we will soon come to know your story.
We met during law school and have been married for almost 12 years. We have 2 incredible children through adoption: Maddie (9) and Christopher (7). Maddie is a typical child and Chris is cognitively typical, but he has cerebral palsy which affects him physically. The kids have a fabulous relationship - it is exactly what you would hope and expect a brother/sister relationship to be at their ages. It can be a little nutty at times, but the only thing we would change is the number of children we have. We cannot wait to add another baby to our family!
We live in a very family-friendly neighborhood with lots of children. It is a short walk to many shops, restaurants and markets. Someone is always running out to grab coffee or something to barbeque for dinner. Our home is a California Bungalow that was built in 1904. It is a very happy house with a back yard, play structure and lots of trees. We live near both of our families and regularly see them for everyday events and special occasions. Our families are a big part of our lives and holiday celebrations are very large and fun.
Todd is an attorney who works a regular schedule. He is home at night and on the weekends. I am also an attorney, but I stopped working in 2009. Raising Chris and Maddie keeps me very busy as the children have homework, school activities, sports and therapy. I am able to be a part of all of these activities in a way that was impossible for me when I was working. Todd is very involved too. He is a big activity planner for our family and makes sure we are ready for any and all sporting/outdoor events we attend. He is a fabulous dad and is very connected to the kids!
We love going to the beach and to the mountains. Todd has hiked and camped his whole life. Todd lived by the beach after law school and surfed on a regular basis. He loves the ocean and is enjoying teaching Maddie to surf when we go to the beach. We also like to go to our local mountains to hike and we take family trips to Yosemite, Maui, the beach and the desert. My favorite activity is running. I have run many races, including 7 marathons. I run every week and also enjoy Pilates. We are an active family.
You may be wondering why we decided to adopt our children. I was born with a narrow heart valve and while it did not affect my daily life, it posed a big risk to me if I became pregnant. We also have several friends and family members who either are adopted or have adopted their children. Through them and through the adoption of Maddie and Christopher, we saw how the adoption of a child is the most incredible gift of love. Todd and I feel that adoption is the right choice for us and we are so excited to begin the process for our third child!
We hope you enjoyed this introduction to our family. We cannot wait to meet you and share more about each other.
Todd & Anne
