From Us to You

“We look at adoption as a very sacred exchange. It was not done lightly on either side. I would dedicate my life to this child.” – Jamie Lee Curtis

Hello,

Our names are Robert and Heather. We are a caring, dedicated, responsible, and loving couple. After we learned of our infertility, it didn’t take us long to decide that adoption was the avenue that we wanted to pursue in order to have a family. Having a child, no matter where he or she came from, was what we wanted most to complete our family. In 2013, our lives changed forever through the adoption of our son, Grayson. We knew we would love a child, but we never imagined to what degree. We are completely dedicated to giving him a happy, loving, and safe home and he has given us so much happiness and love in return. He has truly been the light of our lives.

Our home is located in a wonderful town, which has so many amazing and fun things to do with kids and as a family, as well as some of the best schools in the state. We love to spend time at the local parks (one of which is across the street), museums, sporting events, ride bikes…anything to spend time together. We love walking downtown to have dinner, shop, or grab ice cream! We can hop on the train (which is also within walking distance) and be in the city in 20 minutes! We travel A LOT and always do so as a family. We want our children to see the world and to create lifelong memories!

Robert is a Director of Engineering for his company.  He has an extremely high work ethic, has traveled all over the world, and has a lot to share through his experience of other cultures. Golf is his passion and loves spending time with Grayson on the golf course and he can’t wait until he can take Grayson and your little one out on the course together! He also loves to play basketball and feels it is important to be healthy. He has a good relationship with his parents and has one brother who is his best friend. Robert is a great dad because he is doting, even-tempered and very thoughtful of others. He adores our son and his nephew and wants so much to raise another child.

Heather has a master’s degree in education and is fluent in Spanish. She taught English as a Second Language for fourteen years, however she is no longer teaching and enjoys being a stay-at-home mom. Her passion in life is being around children and making a difference in their lives. She is extremely creative: she spends her free time knitting, paper crafting, and sewing. She also loves having craft time and building Legos with Grayson. Heather is an only child and is very close to her family. She has been blessed by adoption twice.  Heather’s mom married her stepfather when she was three years old and he legally adopted her shortly after.  And then the adoption of Grayson made it possible for her to become the mother she had dreamed of and to provide a child with the amazing childhood and life her father gave to her.

Grayson absolutely adores children and we are eager to grow our family. When we met Grayson’s birth mother, we also met her brother who not only supported her decision of adoption, but also stayed with her every minute in the hospital. After witnessing that special relationship, we knew that’s what we wanted for Grayson…a sibling.

Thank you for taking the time to read our letter and consider us for this precious gift. We can promise that your child will be loved, cared for, and we will forever admire you and be thankful to you for giving us this gift.

Truly,
Robert and Heather

Our Lifestyle

We met later in life than most people, but our experiences make us more grateful for the gift of our relationship. We lean on and support each other at every turn. Our time is devoted to Grayson, playing with him, reading to him, and loving him. We spend a lot of time together as a family frequenting museums, festivals, sporting events, playing at playgrounds and riding our bikes…and we are also known to wake up on a Saturday and head out of town on an impromptu road trip! We take pleasure in dining at nice restaurants but can be equally happy enjoying home-cooked meals. We see our family and friends often and appreciate the time spent with them. We enjoy traveling and do so quite frequently. We believe it’s important to show children the world and allowing them to experience as much as they possibly can (Grayson has been on over 80 airplanes and 5 countries!) Our relationship is very easy and we get along extremely well. We love each other and feel fortunate to have married our best friend.

About Heather, by Robert

I was single and consumed in my work in my middle thirties and never thought I was going to get married or meet the right girl.  This all changed the day I met my future wife, Heather.  Not only was she stunningly beautiful; she was extremely intelligent and had a great sense of humor which was really important to me.  For me, the right girl is someone who can carry on an intelligent conversation with your boss, treat you like a king (even when you don’t deserve it), be the most loving mom and partner in the world, and most important…makes the best tostadas in the world (just kidding on the importance level, but she IS a great cook!).  Once our son, Grayson, came into our lives, she took motherhood to a new level and showers Grayson with so much love and attention…he is the luckiest boy in the world!  I am so honored to have married Heather, I have not only found the perfect wife and mom to our son but I also have found my soulmate forever.

About Robert, by Heather

I had started giving up hope of finding the one until I met Robert. Fate brought us together through a dating website, but who would have ever known that it would take technology to lead me to my one who lived only a half-mile away! Robert is one of those nice guys. The kind of man who gives unconditionally and makes the happiness, love, and security of his family his utmost priority. He is my biggest cheerleader and emotional supporter. He is incredibly intelligent and hardworking, yet never brings work home with him.  He is an amazing father who spends quality time with Grayson and loves him dearly. I can already see how he’s teaching him to be a strong man, but with a big, soft heart. It takes a special man to always stand by your side while also putting you on a pedestal…and at the same time, will hold your hand through life’s journey. I am so richly blessed to have found that in him.

About Grayson

Grayson was born in Texas and we met him and his birth family the day after he was born. He is now 8 years old and in the second grade. Within seconds of meeting Grayson, everyone sees his genuine happiness and his smile is truly contagious! People, friends and strangers alike, have always commented to us about what a happy kid he is! He has truly been a joy from the moment he made us parents…truly a dream realized. Our lives for the past 8 years have been consumed by this amazing little boy who loves to talk, question, and dream. He likes to ride his bike, build Legos, play video games, and play with his friends. He and his friends can spend hours in the yard playing make believe in the playhouse in the summer or shooting snowballs from the fort on top of his swing set in the winter. He takes karate, is learning to play hockey, and is a great baseball player. He also looks forward to afternoons spent with Robert on the golf course, but we haven’t figured out yet if it’s because he likes the game or just wants to drive the cart! He has spent the past few years trying out different sports to see which ones he likes and is good at. We support and encourage anything he wants to try. He’s amazing at video games and beats them all in an astonishingly short amount of time! He loves anything about history and also likes to read. He loves hard and tells us 20 times a day that he loves us. Multiple days a week, Grayson says “It’s the best day ever!” and he really means it. Most of all, family means a lot to Grayson and he wants so desperately to be a big brother. All of his friends have siblings and their parents are always telling us how he plays with the little ones when he goes to their houses. He adores babies and loves to help push strollers and feed them. For his last birthday, he asked for a baby sibling and we’re pretty sure he will again this year. He wants to be a big brother just as badly as we want to become parents again. We can sure you that he would be the BEST big brother to your child.

Home & Neighborhood

Our home is located in an area that is an amazing place for raising children, and there is so much we’ve been able to do with our son here. There are too many children in the area to count, so it’s extremely kid-friendly. We can walk to our town’s downtown to many shops, restaurants, the library, one of the oldest theaters in the country, and the train that can take us to the largest city in the state within 20 minutes! We just finished completely renovating our 1928 historical home so that everything is new to bring a baby home to. On the open main floor, there is a completely renovated living room, kitchen, and dining room and we have a guest room for all of our family visitors as well. Upstairs, you will find our bedroom, Grayson’s Star Wars themed bedroom complete with a teepee for “camping”…and we are excited about tucking in a baby in the newly-prepared nursery area. We’ve just finished our basement that has an office for Robert to work from home in, a craft room for Heather (and Grayson), Grayson’s Lego room, a playroom with lots of toys and books, and a large family room. We spend many hours in the family room playing board games, video games, and watching our Friday family movies. We have rehabbed and redesigned this home with our future children in mind: family-centered, safe, and kid-friendly. Grayson wants it to be known that the best part is the swing set and playhouse in the backyard!

Our immediate neighbors, next door and across the street, have older children. They are thrilled at the thought of being like surrogate grandparents to a new baby, as they already are with Grayson (they even get him Christmas presents!) The summers with all of our neighbors are the best! We take turns hosting barbecues, playing croquette and giant Yahtzee in the backyards, block parties for holidays, and our personal favorite is karaoke night on the patio next door! We have neighbors with a giant finished basement who love to host hockey viewing parties and Super Bowls and we’ve even braved the snow to have hot chocolate outside by the fire! Everything we do is always family-friendly with lots of kids around. One of the girls next door is in college and absolutely adores Grayson. During the summer and holidays, she works at the bakery in town and always brings him his favorite cherry cookies. She and Grayson are also close pen pals, which started in kindergarten when he was first learning to write. They send each other postcards from places they each visit. One of the boys next to us on the other side is in high school and is one of Grayson’s buddies. He’s a fantastic baseball player on a traveling team and can always be found practicing catching and batting with Grayson…or they can even be found burying each other in the snow! Grayson’s two best friends are both within walking distance and see each other almost every day. He also has two buddies who live within walking distance who are adopted as well, which is wonderful to have in common. We always tell people that we hit the neighbor jackpot when we moved here and we are so thankful that we did!

Our Dog, Callie

In May of 2020, we adopted a one-year-old puppy that was re-homed because of the pandemic (her first family moved to Arizona.) Her name is Callie and she is a black and white lab/collie mix. We spend countless hours taking her on walks and playing with her in the backyard and at the park. Her favorite seems to be playing in the snow, which she can seemingly do forever! She’s even entertaining for the neighbors who love to watch her race around the backyard and hop like a bunny. She gets rubdowns and treats through the fence anytime someone is out in their yard. Callie is the biggest sweetheart and LOVES her boy, Grayson! She has been such a delight and has brought us so much happiness!

Our Families & Friends

Never in our lives have we felt so blessed or have had more love for someone than Grayson. We were taught to have, and believe in having, strong values and feeling valued. We demonstrate those beliefs by being strong role models as parents. We are close to both of our families and, although they live in other states, we see them monthly. Robert has one brother who is married and has a nine-year-old son. Heather is an only child, so that makes her realize how strongly she wants Grayson to have a sibling. Our parents are supportive, generous people and are anxiously waiting to love and spoil a new grandchild. They have welcomed Grayson with open arms from day one and never miss an opportunity to shower him with love.  We also have a strong network of friends who have become an extension of our family. We have both always wanted a big family…the kind of family that plays games together and laughs often. We appreciate our family of three, but are hopeful to give Grayson the gift of a sibling. We will give our children fond memories of their childhood, much like our own.

Our Relationship with Grayson's Birth Mom

Grayson’s birth mom lives in Texas and, while that may seem far away, we’ve managed to grow a fantastic relationship with her. While she was pregnant, she had decided she only wanted updates on Grayson, but didn’t want contact with us, much less have a relationship. We were on board and respectful of her wishes. The first time we met her was in the hospital and we all were instantly connected over this little, baby boy. We now have regular contact with her and Heather has always made sure she has numerous photos, videos and updates. We have also shared keepsakes with her, such as birthday invitations and silhouette portraits. We’ve visited her in Texas on multiple occasions over the years as well. Grayson’s birth mom gave us the greatest gift of her life, a sacrifice that we don’t take lightly. We have enormous respect for her decision and for HER. We love her dearly.

Traditions

We have SO MANY family traditions: some we have kept intact from our childhoods and some we started when Grayson came into our lives. Birthdays are really big to us and we celebrate in a big way. Robert always takes off work on Grayson’s birthday in February and we spend the day celebrating as a family by doing something fun, followed usually by a party the next weekend. Grayson’s last birthday was spent with a surprise trip to Legoland California and he thought it was the greatest trip ever!

We have a huge arboretum nearby and we always have brunch with the bunny at Easter. The Fourth of July is spent with the neighbors having a breakfast barbecue and then we all walk to Main Street to watch our town’s parade. At the end of the summer, right before Grayson goes back to school, we rent a house with Robert’s whole family in Seaside, Florida…our most favorite place to visit. In September, we go apple picking and we have done so since Grayson was a baby. We tend to eat apples in the orchard until we’re sick (don’t worry, we bring plenty home, too!) Grayson’s favorite holiday is Halloween, so we always deck out his room in “scary” décor and he lives for picking out his costume each year. We are never home for Thanksgiving as we alternate between Heather’s family in Ohio and Robert’s family in Alabama. In the years we are in Alabama, we go to the Iron Bowl football game at the University of Alabama. This is true boy-bonding time as Robert and Grayson share the love of Alabama football!

Christmas has the most traditions for us. The Elf on the Shelf, Chewie, makes his appearance after Thanksgiving and brings Grayson notes, treats, and little gifts. We always have breakfast with Santa and take a ride on a Polar Express train. The arboretum has a huge walking light display, which is always at the top of our list to do every year (and usually with friends). Our favorite tradition is when, each year, we take the train into the city and spend the entire weekend before Christmas there. We stay at a hotel, see a Broadway show, go shopping so Grayson can pick out a Lego set at the Lego store, eat at our favorite restaurants, see the giant Christmas tree and store windows at Macy’s, and end the weekend with brunch at the top of the tallest building in the city! Of course, no Christmas is complete without matching Christmas pajamas…8 years in a row! Perhaps the smallest, yet most meaningful traditions are when Robert gets donuts every Saturday morning for Grayson (like Heather’s dad did for her as a kid) and they watch Star Wars cartoons together or when Heather and Grayson read and snuggle every night before bed.

What We Will Share

We have always been 100% open and honest with Grayson about his story and will do the same for your child. For Grayson, it started from day one and there wasn’t a defining date of when he found out about his adoption.  Heather was adopted by her stepfather and he’s always loved her (maybe even more so) like she was his own. For this reason, she grew up knowing she was special, something she had in her life, unlike the other kids she knew. We have continued that with Grayson and celebrated the fact that he’s very blessed to have two moms who love him. He knows that his birth mom was not in a place in her life where she could have raised a child and she wanted the absolute best life that she could have chosen for him. We talk about her and adoption often, in regular conversation, and he is always encouraged and welcomed to ask questions. He is so proud to be adopted and tells that to his teachers, friends, strangers…really anyone who will listen!
