Can I Place My Baby for Adoption After I’ve Taken Them Home?

View Waiting Families

Yes — you can still choose adoption, even if you’ve already brought your baby home.

Whether your baby is a few days, weeks, or even months old, it’s not too late to make a plan. Life circumstances change. Emotions shift. And sometimes, what felt possible before birth doesn’t feel manageable now.

You’re not a bad parent. You’re not giving up.
You’re exploring the best option for your baby — and for your future.

At Adoption Network, we’ve supported many women who made the adoption decision after leaving the hospital. We’re here to help you do it legally, safely, and with compassion.

Why Some Women Choose Adoption After Birth

There are many reasons you may be thinking about adoption after coming home with your baby:

  • You thought you could parent, but the reality is harder than expected
  • You don’t have support from family, the father, or your community
  • You’re facing financial, emotional, or mental health struggles
  • You’re overwhelmed, scared, or unsure what to do next
  • You love your baby — but want more for them than you can provide right now

Whatever your reason, you’re not alone. And it’s okay to ask for help.

How the Process Works

The process of placing a baby for adoption after birth is very similar to choosing adoption during pregnancy. Here’s how it typically works:

Step 1: Contact an Advocate

We’ll speak with you (privately and without judgment) to explain your rights and answer any questions. You’re in full control the entire time.

Step 2: Review Family Profiles

You’ll choose from waiting families who are legally approved and emotionally ready to adopt. Many can travel to you within hours.

Step 3: Create a Plan

You’ll work with your advisor to build an adoption plan based on your preferences — including openness, future contact, and emotional support.

Step 4: Legal Support

ANLC’s legal team will walk you through your rights, ensure everything is documented properly, and help you finalize the plan.

Will My Baby Go Into Foster Care?

No. In a private adoption with ANLC, your baby is placed directly with the adoptive family you choose — not through the state or foster system.

Everything is handled legally, ethically, and with care.

Is There a Time Limit?

There is no hard deadline — but it’s best to reach out as soon as possible so we can begin the process in a way that protects your rights and supports your healing.

We’ve helped birth mothers place babies at:

  • 1 week old
  • 3 weeks old
  • 2 months old
  • Even older infants, depending on the state and circumstances

What If I’ve Bonded With My Baby?

Many birth mothers who place after birth love their babies deeply — and often feel an even stronger desire to ensure they have a secure, stable, and loving future.

Placing after bonding doesn’t mean you’re weak.
It means you’re strong enough to do what you believe is best.

We’ll support your emotional healing and ensure you’re never rushed or pressured.

Key Adoption Agency Considerations

Choosing adoption after taking your baby home is incredibly emotional — and incredibly brave.

It means putting your child’s future first, even when it’s hard. And we’ll be here to guide you with compassion, clarity, and support.
