What Support Is Available for Birth Mothers During the Adoption Process?

View Waiting Families

If you’re pregnant and thinking about adoption, one of the first things you might ask is:

“Will I get any help while I’m pregnant?”
“Can someone support me through this?”

The short answer is: Yes. In most states, financial and emotional support is available to birth mothers during the adoption process — and you won’t have to figure it out alone.

At Adoption Network Law Center (ANLC), we guide expectant mothers through this journey every day, offering the care, respect, and resources you deserve.

What Kind of Support Can I Receive?

Depending on your state laws, you may be eligible for help with:

Housing or rent support

If you’re struggling to keep a stable roof over your head, support may be available to help cover rent or housing expenses during your pregnancy.

Groceries and food

You may be able to receive assistance for essential living expenses, including food and basic necessities.

Transportation

Gas cards, rides to appointments, or public transit passes may be covered to ensure you get the care you need.

Medical care and maternity expenses

Prenatal visits, ultrasounds, delivery costs, and other medical needs may be coordinated and paid for.

Maternity clothing and hygiene supplies

Depending on your needs, funds may be available for maternity clothing and pregnancy-related hygiene items.

Counseling and emotional support

Adoption is an emotional decision. You deserve nonjudgmental counseling and post-placement support if and when you need it.

Is It Legal to Receive Financial Support?

Yes — but only in the ways permitted by your state.

Adoptive families often provide this support through an adoption attorney or licensed law center like ANLC. All financial assistance is:

  • Fully documented and court-approved
  • Coordinated by licensed legal professionals
  • Never direct cash payments
  • Designed to reduce stress — not to influence your decision

You are never being “paid” to place your baby. This support is offered to help you through a challenging time with dignity and care.

What If I Change My Mind?

It’s your right to change your mind at any time during the adoption process — up until you legally sign placement papers after the baby is born.

If you’ve received legal pregnancy-related assistance and later decide not to proceed with adoption, you will not be required to “pay back” support unless fraud or deception is involved.

Your emotional health and decision-making come first.

Key Adoption Agency Considerations

You don’t need to walk this path alone — or without help.

Adoption may be the hardest decision you ever make, but it should also be one where you feel supported, respected, and cared for every step of the way.
