From Us to You

Dear Expectant Birth Mother,

We are so excited that you are considering placing your child with us!  Your child will experience nature, adventure, and laughter on a regular basis.  We believe in having fun, being silly, and laughing until we cry.  We will enjoy spending time together more than anything, and we can’t wait to provide support for sports, hobbies, or music they may want to pursue.  Because we have no other children your child will get all the love, support, and attention they need.

We have spent years building a strong relationship filled with love and adventure.  We met on a Sierra Club winter hiking and camping that Andy was leading.  We hiked in Pisgah National Forest, (which is close to where we just moved).  We camped in a nearby campground, and Andy cooked a delicious pasta dinner.  Later that night, Christy’s tent zipper froze shut and it took everybody’s help to get her out in the morning!  It was a weekend we will always remember.  We look forward to sharing our adventures with your child, but hopefully most of them will be warmer!

When we think about the future and our family, we get so excited!  There are so many things we want to do as a family!  Of course, we want to hike, camp and kayak as a family – it’s what we do.  But we also look forward to teaching your child important things like how to be healthy, successful, and responsible; and little things, like how to cook, swim, and ride a bike.

Christy is now teaching online classes at home.  This will allow her to be able to take a child on many different daily adventures and be involved in lots of activities.  Christy looks forward to trips to the library, playgrounds, museums, and county parks.  Andy travels some for work, which will allow us to travel with him and see new places.  Andy also loves to take our dogs on walks in the neighborhood and on trails in the woods behind our house.  Andy is our planner when it comes to our trips, and he has already come up with a list of ideas long enough to keep us busy forever!  Andy also likes to play board games and enjoys spending time reading, listening to music, and watching football.  Andy mostly looks forward to sharing his love of nature with your child; he is a true adventurer.

We are very persevering, and we could not give up on having the family we have always wanted.  We cannot wait to experience parenthood and all that comes with it.  Because Andy was adopted and Christy is a teacher, adoption became our chosen path to build our family.  We are very thankful that you are considering us, and hope to have an ongoing relationship with you, if you would like.  We understand this is a difficult decision, and we will respect the kind of relationship you want.  We will make sure your child knows that you love them and what an amazing, strong person you are.

Sincerely,
Andy and Christy

Why We Are Choosing to Adopt

After several failed infertility treatments, we had an appointment to discuss our options.  We were tired of needles, and endless appointments, and disappointments.  Adoption had always been a possibility for us since both Andy and his sister were adopted.  We had talked about it before, and after some time we decided this was how we wanted to build our family.  After talking with ANLC, we were certain we were making the right decision.  Andy has always felt adoption was a very noble thing, and he looks forward to being the father his adoptive dad was for him.  We also spent time talking with family and friends who have adopted, as well as a few people we know that placed their child.

About Christy, by Andy

Christy is one of the most nurturing people I know.  She has taught high school for over 20 years and she really cares about each and every one of her students .  She also coached swimming and cross country during most of those years and her passion for the success of her students and athletes never ceases to amaze me!  She is not just a teacher, but a second mom to so many of them. Over the years, they still reach out to her for advice.   I have heard her talking to troubled students and athletes and am amazed at her level of patience and positivity with them.  She has a unique way of listening and motivating with kindness.   It has been amazing to see the many, many students she has worked with turn their mindsets around and have successful endings.
I look forward to watching Christy teach your child to swim, ride a bike, cook, make crafts, and anything else your child wants to learn. Christy is a very determined person and will learn whatever she needs to in order to help your child reach their dream or goal. I envision her outside at dusk collecting lightning bugs to make an indoor natural nightlight and teaching your child all about nature, flowers, and animals.  She loves to be outside and share that love and knowledge of nature… pointing out cool mushrooms, rocks, and flowers. I really look forward to watching her and your child make family Halloween costumes, Christmas Cookies and decorate our tree and our house for all the holidays.

Christy has been my best friend and that is one of the reasons why I wanted to spend my life with her.  There isn’t anyone else I’d rather join me on this adventure called Life.  She has been unwavering in her love and support, and because of her, I’m ready for the next one – starting a family of our own.

About Andy, by Christy

I can’t think of anybody I would rather go through life with. It hasn’t always been easy, the infertility journey was brutal, but he has always stood right by my side being the most supportive man I know.  I love how he can make me laugh, and what a good listener he is. I can’t wait to watch him teach your child how to read hiking maps, go on adventures and learn about nature. I loved watching him show my nephew our favorite waterfalls and trails, it will be even sweeter with a child of our own. I know I will also enjoy watching Andy help with ALL the math homework, because he is so much better than me at “mathing”.  Andy will be the best adventure planner when we are a family. I know he will find little surprises and fun things to do along the way on our family vacations.  One time on our way for our summer trip, he found a wolf sanctuary and surprised me with tickets. The wolves were in a large enclosure, but they were so beautiful.  I also can’t wait to watch them play ball, play with the dogs, and dance to our favorite music in the living room or on the deck- jam bands, like Phish, Widespread Panic, and the Grateful Dead. There is almost always music playing in our house and while we are not great dancers, we dance badly together and have fun.

Our Lifestyle

We have a very active lifestyle – we are always on the go and looking for an adventure. We can’t wait to include your child in our daily life! We are looking forward to teaching your child how to paddle a kayak, hike, camp, and ride a bike.  We often meet up with friends who have children for hiking, kayaking, or floating down the river in a tube.  Occasionally we go out to watch jam bands or bluegrass musicians perform at local venues or at festivals.

We work from home and look forward to all the family time we’ll spend with your child. Each morning, we’ll wake up and start the day with a home cooked breakfast. After breakfast, the three of us will spend time outside walking the dogs, tending the garden, and exploring nature. Then, we’ll go off to find the day’s adventure, whether that’s taking a trip to the library, local playgrounds, community pools, or the forest!

While we enjoy our outdoor adventures, we also enjoy spending time at home. We look forward to family movie nights and making popcorn, playing board games, and watching football!  It will be fun to build indoor pillow and blanket forts where we can read our favorite stories – we have saved some of our own books from childhood just for these occasions!

We are pretty serious Appalachian State fans and go to most of the home football games. One highlight of these trips is enjoying delicious food off the grill while tailgating with friends and other families.  We generally cook way too much food, but we haven’t had anybody complain!  Christy’s sister visits often with her youngest boy, and they can’t wait to come and play on weekends and in the summer.  We also have a lot of close friends in the area.  One is a retired nurse, and I know she won’t mind us calling for advice!  We also have several other friends in the area with children and we look forward to hosting cookouts and family-friendly activities, like game and movie nights.

Our Home & Neighborhood

Last year we moved into our new home in the mountains.  It is a large house with a basement that we are currently finishing so grandparents and other family members can come and stay for extended periods of time.  It will have 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a large kitchen, dining room, family room, den, office, workout room, and back deck.  There is an extra room we are saving to make into a playroom or game room.  We have an open backyard with a fire pit, and we can’t wait to have family, friends, and their kids over to have cookouts and make s’mores over the fire.  There is plenty of room for a swing-set, or maybe even a pool someday!  Our front yard is beautiful thanks to the previous owners; it is practically a botanical garden!  Something is always blooming; there are two pear trees, a peach tree and we planted some blueberry bushes.  Behind our house is several acres of forest with numerous trails.  It will be so much fun to explore the woods, pick fresh fruit, and gather vegetables from our garden with a child.  We frequently see wildlife in our yard, including deer, birds, and white squirrels.  We have named the white squirrel that visits our back deck “snowflake”, and we enjoy watching him steal the birdseed from our bird feeders.  We also enjoy summer nights on the deck looking at the stars and catching lightning bugs to make homemade night lights.

Our neighborhood is between two lovely mountain towns that are quite diverse.  Our neighborhood is quiet, and it has a mixture of age groups – young couples to retirees.  In the short time we have been here we have already made friends with three families, and hope to meet more at the annual picnic.  It is truly beautiful up here with lots of wildlife, trees, rhododendrons, azaleas, and wildflowers.  People walk their dogs in the street and stop to say hello.  There are many teachers in our neighborhood, and Amy across the street is a Special Ed teacher.   Our neighborhood doesn’t have amenities, but we are 10 minutes from a State and Forest that has hiking and mountain biking trails, lakes, swimming holes, and waterfalls.  We will enjoy spending so much time there with your child – watching them catch their first fish, teaching them to swim, and counting the cows, horses, goats, and other farm animals on the way!  The valley below us is filled with farms and produce stands that we shop at in season.

Racial & Cultural Diversity

We once saw a family with shirts that said, “Families don’t have to match”, and we agreed this was a perfect statement.  It doesn’t matter if we match, but support and understanding of cultural differences are important.  We look forward to exploring our child’s culture and heritage with them as they grow, should it be different from ours.  We promise to expose them to their culture, history, and heritage while also providing him or her with role models such as teachers, coaches, and doctors of their ethnicity.  Andy’s family is diverse, and we have a biracial niece and black brother-in-law.  We also have a diverse group of friends, live in a diverse area, and believe diversity makes the world a better place.  We enjoy a variety of music genres, movies, and books.  Including these along with good parenting will also help your child appreciate diversity and equality.

Family Traditions

Every summer, we take 2-4 weeks for a family adventure.  We have been to many different states and foreign countries to explore national parks and other wilderness areas.  We spend most of our trips camping, backpacking, hiking, and kayaking.  We enjoy exploring new areas, seeing amazing scenery, watching the wildlife, and taking a break from civilization.  We can’t wait to share these experiences with a child!  We travel for the holidays and other major events, like birthdays and weddings, to visit our parents and siblings.

We are very much looking forward to starting more Halloween traditions, as it is Andy’s favorite holiday.  Some of our current Halloween traditions are carving pumpkins, doing funny yard decorations that the neighborhood kids love, and this past Halloween, Christy did a Halloween 4K dressed up as The Little Mermaid. When your child joins our family, we can’t wait to start traditions like family-themed Halloween costumes, teaching them how to safely carve pumpkins, and trick or treating. Christmas and Thanksgiving will be other special holidays full of traditions. Christy is looking forward to baking and decorating Christmas cookies, as that is something she did with her mom and sister growing up.  it makes the house smell almost as good as Thanksgiving!  Speaking of Thanksgiving, Christy makes the best sweet potato casserole and turkey every year.  Megan, Christy’s sister, always brings yummy mashed potatoes and corn pudding.  Andy’s mom brings this cranberry dish that makes you forget you are actually eating tart cranberries – it is so good!  Your child will also certainly enjoy Christy’s pumpkin and apple pies, which make the house smell delightful.  At Easter time we look forward to dyeing eggs and making Easter baskets.  Christy loves to cook so spending time in the kitchen together is something we are hoping to enjoy.  We also really look forward to nightly bedtime stories, Mickey Mouse pancakes in the morning, and blanket forts.
