From Us to You

Dear Expectant Mother,

We are so excited that you are considering placing your child with us, otherwise we could not become parents. We want you to know that your selflessness is not taken lightly. We will do our very best to honor your decision and provide a lifetime of love, security, and adventure for your child.

We are very persevering people, and just could not give up on having the family we have always wanted. We cannot wait to experience parenthood and all that comes with it. Since Andy was adopted and Christy is a teacher, adoption seemed like the perfect answer. We are very thankful that you are considering us, and hope to have an ongoing relationship with you, if you would like, at any capacity. We understand this is a difficult decision, and we will respect the kind of relationship you would like, or none at all.

We have spent years building a strong relationship filled with love and adventure. We met on a Sierra Club hike that Andy was leading. We hiked in Pisgah National Forest. We camped in a nearby campground, and Andy cooked a delicious pasta dinner. Later that night, Christy’s tent zipper froze shut and it took everybody’s help to get her out in the morning! It was a weekend we will always remember. We look forward to sharing our adventures with your child.

Every year we take a month to travel and see this beautiful country. We hike, kayak, camp and explore national parks, mountains and oceans. We have also traveled to Peru, Mexico, Canada and Jamaica. Christy was lucky enough to travel to Denmark and Germany with students from her previous teaching job. We also spend time with family on the holidays, which usually involves some travel to Pennsylvania as we both have family there.

When we think about the future and our family, we get so excited! There are so many things we want to do as a family! Of course, we want to hike, camp and kayak as a family, it’s what we do. But we also look forward to teaching your child important things like how to be healthy, successful, and responsible; and little things, like how to cook, swim, and ride a bike.

Christy is now teaching online classes at home, coaching swimming, and doing swim lessons at the YMCA. This will allow her to be able to take a child on many different adventures and be involved in lots of activities. Christy looks forward to trips to the library, Discovery Place, museums, and county parks. Andy travels some for work, which will allow us to travel with him and see new places. Just this week, we both went to Boulder Colorado! Andy also loves to take our dogs on walks to our pond and he is already talking about running with a stroller. Andy is our planner when it comes to our trips, and he has already come up with a list long enough to keep us busy forever! Andy also likes to play board games and enjoys spending time reading, listening to music, and watching football. Andy mostly looks forward to sharing his love of nature with your child; he is a true adventurer.

Thank you so much for allowing us the huge responsibility of parenting your child. We will cherish you and this opportunity forever.

Sincerely,
Andy and Christy

Our Home & Neighborhood

We live in a single-story, cozy ranch home in a small neighborhood. Our house has a nice front and back yard and a deck. Inside we have an open floor plan with lots of windows so we can view the forest behind our house and the dogs can view the squirrels and birds in the front yard. It has three bedrooms and two, full bathrooms, as well as a home office. We have a garage where we store most of our toys, so our cars are parked in our shaded driveway. While our home is small, we can really pack the family in on the holidays. Usually we have my (Christy) parents, my sister’s family, and Andy’s mom, adoptive sister, brother in law, and our niece. We live in a small neighborhood in the suburbs. Our side of town is pretty nice – we have a shopping center, an outlet mall, two nature preserves with hiking trails, and we are close to Lake Wylie. In our neighborhood we have a small pond with a 1/3-mile walking trail around it, a really nice playground, turtles, ducks and great blue herons. There is a small trail in the woods behind the pond where we take our dogs to play. The best thing about our neighborhood is our neighbors. We have become close friends with our next-door neighbors; we frequently get together to play board games or watch NFL football. We actually are pretty close with everybody on our street and have even had a pool party together. It is nice to know that we can call on any of our neighbors at any time.

Our Lifestyle

We have a very active lifestyle, always on the go and looking for an adventure! We spend a lot of our weekend time outside, camping, kayaking, mountain biking but mostly hiking. We have friends we like to do this with, and some of them also have young children. During the week, while working, we still find ways to get outside locally by mountain biking, running and swimming. Occasionally we compete in races, we love outdoor music festivals and concerts.

Why We Are Choosing to Adopt

We began the adoption journey after several rounds of infertility treatments. We had an appointment to discuss our options. We were tired of needles, and endless appointments, and disappointments. Adoption had always been a possibility for us since both Andy and his sister are adopted. We had talked about it before, and after some time we decided this was how we wanted to build our family. After talking with ANLC, we were certain we were making the right decision.

Our Traditions

Every summer, we take a month to go on a family adventure. We have been to many different states and countries to explore state and national parks and other wilderness areas. Some of our most memorable have been Alaska, Peru, Canada, Colorado, Wyoming, Washington, Oregon and California. We have hiked, kayaked and learned to use ice axes to climb the biggest peaks of Canada! We are also a big football family and have season tickets to the Appalachian State Mountaineers home games, and we cheer the Eagles on with our neighbors on Sundays. We travel for the holidays to see our parents and siblings as well as for other celebrations such as birthdays or important milestones. We are very much looking forward to starting some Halloween traditions, as it is Andy’s favorite holiday. We are excited to start new traditions as a family. We really look forward to nightly bed time stories, blanket forts and summer vacations. We are definitely looking forward to holiday traditions like coloring Easter Eggs, making Christmas cookies and dressing up and decorating the house for Halloween. We can’t wait to teach them how to ride a bike, take a hike and grow things in our garden. We love to have family breakfasts and cookouts on our back deck. Christy loves to spend time in the kitchen and looks forward to teaching our child how to cook at an age appropriate level. As a teacher she also looks forward to teaching them about science, nature and anything related to school and learning. Andy really can’t wait to teach our child how to read a map, about nature and adventure.

Cultural Diversity

We saw a family with shirts that said, “families don’t have to match” right before our failed adoption. We both thought, that was just the perfect statement. It doesn’t matter if we match, but support and understanding of cultural differences are important. We look forward to exploring our child’s culture and heritage with them as they grow. We promise to expose them to their culture, history and heritage while also providing him or her with role models such as teachers, coaches and doctors of their ethnicity. We also live in a diverse neighborhood on a diverse side of town which we think is wonderful for any child to have access to.
