From Me to You

Dear Expectant Mother,

Considering adoption for your child demonstrates the strength and love you have for your unborn baby. I deeply appreciate you taking the time to learn more about me.

I have always wanted to be a mom and my entire life I have been surrounded by children. I am Godmother to 6 children that I am very close to. I have established myself in my career, and have focused on being financially secure, so I could provide a wonderful life for a child. I have reached the point in my life that I have accomplished so much career wise and now my greater purpose in life is to become a mother. I have experienced great love and heartbreak in my life, and those experiences have made me a stronger person. While I am still single, I do believe in love- but my focus right now is on starting my own family.

Adoption is not new to my family as my aunt has adopted two children that I am extremely close to. My aunt and cousins have been a wonderful support through this process, and I know firsthand what living in a beautiful blended adopted family is like. I also have friends who have been adopted and as I grew up surrounded by them, I knew adopting was something I want to do in life.

Family is everything to me and my entire life I was surrounded by a family that welcomed everyone and taught me love. My parents divorced when I was younger, but I was very loved by them both and still am today. My father always encouraged my sister and I to study and focus on education so we could have successful lives. My mother was and still is my everything; she was the mother, the father, the teacher, the one who let me crawl in her bed when I was scared, gave me advice but also set the ground rules! I deeply appreciate her. As I face being a single parent, and you consider if that is the right thing for your child, I have thought about a few things. I know what being raised by mostly one parent is like. I have an incredible role model in my mother for the strength, determination and patience it takes to raise children.

While I will love and care for your child with my whole heart I do think it is important as a single mother to provide a child with positive male role models in their lives. I am very close to my brother-in-law who coaches my nieces and nephews’ sports teams and is a wonderful father to his 3 wonderful children. I also have several close friends who are kind, loving, passionate men; some of whom have children and some who don’t. Their careers range from stay-at-home dad and sales rep to deep-sea fisherman and just as their careers vary, so do their ethnicities.

I enjoy traveling. As a child, my mom took us all over the world to India, Africa, Europe and places in the US. I plan on doing the same thing with your child. I want them to know the world, see the beauty in different cultures. Experience what food in other places of the world is like, maybe even learn another language. I studied French in college and speak basic French and, in addition, speak some elementary Spanish. My sister is fluent in Spanish. My father is from India and speaks Tamil. We were raised to embrace learning other languages and always be open to experience various cultural traditions around the world.

As you imagine what life would be like for your child with me, I thought I would share with you some of what we would be doing together! I am a major snuggler, my niece and I have earned the nickname “Glommy” in our family because we love to give hugs…so your child would have lots of hugs! I sing out loud in the car, and frequently have dance parties by myself in the kitchen. Music is important to me, so I will be singing in the car with your baby and we will dance a lot laughing at ourselves. We will be outside enjoying the sunshine going on walks, playing at the park and of course going to the beach! My nieces and nephews all play ice hockey, so I am sure they will want to be teaching their cousin to play as well one day.

I have a second home in the Bahamas where we will vacation frequently and where we will dance to reggae music, be at the beach, swim and enjoy dinners with my friends down there whom I consider family! We have big dinners where we cook what the local fish catch of the day is with peas and rice and baked macaroni. Usually, the nights end in a game of cards or dominos.

The holidays are typically spent with my entire family: my sister and her kids and our extended family. We are always doing something fun, whether it’s a game of charades, singing along to my mom playing the harmonica or baking altogether. This past Christmas, we all picked names out of a hat and had to write a Rap song about another family member. It was hilarious to see everyone perform their Christmas Rap!

It’s hard to put into words the immense gratitude I have for you and I want you to know that your child will always know that they have a first mother who loves them very much. You will always be a positive part of our life in conversation and nightly prayer. You are our biggest gift and blessing, to bring us together. Love, family, honesty, travel, smiles, and fun will be what your child’s future will be filled with.

Hugs,
Anu

Why I Am Choosing to Adopt

I have so much love to give. I have always wanted to be a mother. I grew up with a large, extended family with so many cousins. I was always around children and my sister has 3 children of her own that I am extremely close to. My mother raised my sister and me mostly on her own. My father wasn’t present often due to work. She taught me what unconditional love and protection are. I have been so blessed with an amazing career and financial stability, but life is so much more than that. A child would provide me with a greater purpose in life, someone to care for every day, more than myself, as my mother did for my sister and me. I have seen and traveled the world, learned to speak some foreign languages and I want to share that with your child. I want to give them the experiences that encourage them to be their best self and live a full and happy life. I grew up in a mixed-race household. So, to me, being able to pass along to a child the incredible opportunities the world has to offer would be incredible. This would be the greatest blessing I could ever ask for, and truly be the best gift.

My Lifestyle

I have a routine week. I have the flexibility to work from home a few days a week which is very nice.  I start my day at home with a quick workout and breakfast. I work every day at a great job and enjoy cooking at home.  I usually go for a walk outside at the park every night. I love being outside, enjoy the fresh air, and sometimes even FaceTime my mom on my walk. I am very close with my family and I talk to my mom every morning and evening- we have a quick catch up on the day.  Often my sister will also join the call and my nieces and nephew will update us on their day at school or latest sports game.

During my free time, I enjoy spending time with friends and family. We play lots of games whether it’s cards, which can get quite competitive, or playing games outside we always have fun together. I enjoy entertaining and having people come over for dinner, to watch football games or see the red-carpet award shows and see all the latest fashion. I like to bake and recently took a cake decorating class to improve some of my skills.  Music is very important to me. I listen to all types of music from reggae, to hip hop, country, top hits and jazz- the range is vast, but it always puts me in a good mood. I just started to learn to play the guitar which has been a humbling experience. It is so much harder than I expected.

My Career

I am so fortunate to have my dream job! When I was little I would sit on my grandma’s couch and flip through all her clothing catalogs picking out which was my favorite outfit on each page.   Today, I am doing just the same thing! I work as an executive in the fashion industry. I have worked for many major clothing brands as a leader of the buying teams. My job is to work with the designers to create incredible products that we buy and bring to the website and stores. I work on fashion shows to inspire the store teams on what is coming up in their collections and, also talk on stage giving presentations of what the strategies are for the business and what products we are excited to sell online and in our stores.  I once presented a fashion show and delivered a speech on stage for over 5,000 people in Las Vegas; it was terrifying and exciting at the same time. I have traveled the world to discover fashion trends across the globe.  I love helping my friends with ideas on what to wear, styling looks for big events in their life.  Your little one will definitely be the best dressed around town 😊

Home & Neighborhood

I live in a more suburban section of a large city. I love my neighborhood because it’s diverse with many different types of families. I live in a townhome that has 3 bedrooms with enough room for visitors which I love! It’s sunny and has a big kitchen for entertaining and having family meals. I like that I can walk to different parks, restaurants and shopping all in my neighborhood. There is a playground on my block and also a community center with a pool. It’s nice to be able to see people out walking their dogs and enjoying nice weather in the city.

My Home Away from Home

I am fortunate to own a second home in paradise. The Bahamas has been an important place in my life since I was 10 years old.  My parents fell in love with the islands of the Bahamas when I was young, we would spend the summer down there every year as a family. Over the years, the Bahamas became more than a vacation destination, it truly became my second home.  I now own the house my parents once did. I have many friends who live on the island and they truly have become family to me. The culture of the people on the island is one of a warm welcome, like a hug. The Bahamians are free of judgment and find pleasure in the simplest things in life which truly are the most fulfilling.  I visit the island 4-6 times a year and I cannot wait to have a child to bring there as well.  I hope they enjoy the island as much as I do and one day take their children down to the home, that I will pass onto them.    When I am visiting the island there is so much that I enjoy.  I am often out on the water; my friends have a boat, and we fish.  We have caught tuna, snapper, grouper, and many other fish.  Often those nights end with us cooking a big family style dinner with our fresh catch at home and eating outside at the beach.   I like to take long walks on the beach, snorkel out in front of my home and read books under the palm trees.  Reggae music fuels my soul, and at night I can be found in the town square where local artists play steel drums and sing. The kids are dancing in front of the stage and everyone is just happy and free!

In 2019 Hurricane Dorian destroyed the island I love. My friends and families lost loved ones and their homes. My heart was broken, and I knew I needed to help. I quickly organized a fundraiser for the people on Grand Bahama Island and Abaco where the devastation was severe and my friends and family live.  I went to Florida and was able to provide water, canned food, generators and building supplies to ship over to the island to support the people and island I love so much to re-build.  It was a small contribution in the scheme of a much greater need, but I did anything I could to help.  While I was blessed to be in the US with a roof over my head, I had to take care of the island and the people who have taken care of me for so many years.

Family & Friends

I am blessed with an incredible family.  My mom is one of 11 children; therefore, I have many aunts, uncles and cousins and we are all extremely close. In addition, my father has 2 siblings and I have cousins on that side of the family as well. My extended family and I are very close knit and have family gatherings often. In addition, my sister is married with 3 children and I spend quite a bit of time with them. The kids are younger 9, 11, and 13 years old and active in many sports. I cheer them on at their games, vacation with them and visit often.  Family is extremely important to me. My family is truly the definition of unconditional love. We would do anything for each other.  In addition to this incredible group of people, I have a strong friend group whom I consider family. They live close to me and most all are having children whom I am extremely close to. Your child will be loved by many and surrounded by a group of incredible people.

Cultural Diversity

By nature, I am a curious person. I am always looking to learn, better myself.  I am fortunate to have traveled many places and grew up in a mixed-race household. My father was born in India and moved to America when he was in his 20’s. My mother is American of Irish Ancestry.  Those experiences have taught me the importance of having a diverse group of friends both in race as well as thought.   When I was 10 years old, my mom took my sister and me to Africa.  My aunt and uncle lived there, and we spent time with the Masai tribe. The trip had a large impact on me- and one of the first pieces of artwork I bought as an adult was of African tribal women. I think it is so important to have my home reflect the diversity that I care about and have been fortunate enough to be exposed to.  I have friends who are Black, White, Indian, Spanish, Persian, French, and Bahamian.  My best friend is white and from Finland- she is often asked about her accent because people don’t always understand her. But I love her accent and how she speaks. She has taught me some Finnish words and some Finnish recipes.   I minored in French in college and had the opportunity to live in France for a little while when I was younger, I also studied Spanish. My sister is fluent in Spanish and has close friends who live in Spain. We often spend time with them. Learning languages, traveling, and having a diverse group of friends and family is something I cherish and hope to expose my future child to as well.

Family Traditions

I grew up in a mixed-race household with a large extended family. My mom is one of 11 children, so I have over 20 cousins, many aunts and uncles and we are all very close.  My mom is of Irish Ancestry and we have many traditions that center around holidays.   The 4th of July is a special time of year where we all gather at a park in upstate New York that was named after our family. We barbeque, play lots of games outside and enjoy catching up with our family.  My mom and her siblings are all very musically inclined. She often plays the harmonica, one of her brothers plays the sax and the family breaks out in Irish step dancing.

During the holidays, I am always with my sister and her children and my mom.  We have a very close-knit family and often do fun things. For Christmas, we pick names out of a hat to make gifts for each other. Last year we wrote and performed a rap song about whoever we picked! It was hilarious and gave us many laughs the entire night.

My dad is from India, and traditional Indian food is something my family and I enjoy. We often cook together.  My dad plays a lot of golf and lives on the water, we go fishing, practice our golf swings and enjoy time watching movies and going for walks. He is a great dancer and loves music- he is the life of the party, so we have a lot of dance parties and laugh together.

What I Will Teach

As a parent, I will teach a strong moral and ethical foundation of trust, respect and honesty. Unconditional love. Confidence to achieve their dreams. The value of education and the importance of curiosity and learning. A faith filled life teaching them of the importance of God in all we do. I grew up in a household where my father is a practicing Hindu and my mother is a practicing Catholic. I was raised Catholic, but always taught to be open minded to other people’s beliefs. I hope to instill the same open-mindedness in your child. I have a diverse group of friends with varied spiritual beliefs. The exposure to them all has made me a stronger individual, hopefully free of judgment and welcoming to all. I would plan to raise my child in the Catholic faith, but teach them to be open to explore other spiritual connections and be true to their path as they grow up. Kindness would be at the core of all conversations.  Diversity and exposure to various cultures, food, travel, and faiths lead to a greater understanding of how others enrich your life.

My Promise to You

You will always be celebrated in both your child’s life and mine. Without you, there would be no us. I will tell your child about how lucky I am that you picked me to love, guide and take care of them.  You are their birth mother and that will be celebrated every day, and especially on important milestones, like their birth day.  We will be committed to having you as part of our nightly prayers, and the stories we tell on how we became a family will always include you.  I promise to teach your child to be loving, kind, free of judgement and to learn something new every day.  I will support them to reach all their dreams and encourage them to dream big! I will introduce travel to your child and share the beautiful diverse world we have.  I will provide them with a loving, happy home filled with honesty, trust and many hugs and kisses. They will be surrounded by a family that will care for them and create many incredible memories!
