From Us to You

Dear Expecting Mother:

Hello! Our names are Kent and Stefanie and we live in sunny Southern California with our dog Oreo (he’s a ten-pound Shih Tzu/poodle and a lover of all cozy blankets!). A little about us…We met in 2013, through an online dating app, but quickly learned we lived just 30 seconds from each other. Life can be funny that way! We quickly bonded over our love of “car dancing”, music, travel and Disneyland. In fact, on our third date, we unexpectedly found ourselves baking Halloween cupcakes (there isn’t a holiday Stefanie doesn’t love), listening to music and dancing in our socks around the kitchen. It was the best date ever; and, to this day, dancing in our kitchen, in our socks, happens daily!

We absolutely adore children and simply can’t wait to be parents. It’s our dream to raise children together and to expand our family. Kent can’t wait to be a dad and he is very much looking forward to teaching your child how to hit a tennis ball, how to properly throw a Frisbee, and how to build the ultimate s’mores dessert! Stefanie can’t wait to be a mom either. She grew up going to dance competitions and performances with her team, something she cherished deeply. She also loved competitive swimming and other sports. She can’t wait to be a cheering mom from the stands or the audience; and, even more importantly, right next to your child in everything they do!

Even though we work hard, we don’t take ourselves too seriously. Kent loves to tell “Dad jokes”; and, you just never know when Stefanie might break out into a dance move, just to get a smile! It’s truly important to us our home is filled with energy, warmth and fun. We married in 2015 after Kent proposed in Paris on his birthday (he loves a good surprise!), and you may have already guessed…but there was a lot of dancing at our wedding!

We live in a beautiful community, just a few miles from the beach, surrounded by a nature preserve. There is so much we love about our neighborhood. We love taking walks together each evening with Oreo and often envision pushing our child in a stroller and pointing out the beautiful sunset over the hills or the birds and bunnies along the way.

Of course, we very much look forward to going to the playgrounds with your child, but there is a special place in our neighborhood we just can’t wait to visit as a family, and that’s the Campout! We can bring our tents, telescope (there are so many stars here!) and our s’mores kit and spend time together under the night sky. We often pass the Campout on our walks and imagine how fun it would be to spend a night under the stars and would absolutely love to share this with your child. Both of our parents followed us to California and live about 20 minutes away so they will be able to join us for many of these family activities. We would be forever grateful for the opportunity to raise your child here.

Outside of our neighborhood, we’ll love taking your child on many adventures – to the beach, on bike rides, and to our favorite place of all – Disneyland! We have annual passes, as do our parents and friends, and we go as often as we can! We just love the happiness and joy that comes from walking around the park on a beautiful day, eating a churro (or, Corn Dog for Kent), riding rides (especially Thunder Mountain!) and watching fireworks. Many, many times we’ve imagined what it would be like to bring our child to Disneyland and being able to experience the awe and wonder through their eyes. We often picture how fun it will be to share popcorn or a churro, dance along to the Main Street parade and meeting Mickey and Minnie!

As a couple, we are caring and nurturing, but have a silly sense of humor and we don’t take life too seriously. We are so grateful for the many wonderful things life has to offer.  If given the immense responsibility and honor to raise your child, we will teach your child kindness, adventure, and integrity. We will love your child unconditionally and be fierce protectors of their heart. We promise to provide them with every opportunity to expand their learning and encourage them to give back to their community. We admire you and wish you continued strength. Thank you very much for taking the time to read our letter. We can’t possibly understand how difficult your decision must be, please know your time spent getting to know us is greatly appreciated, and if we get a chance to meet one day, we would love to learn more about you.

Thank you for considering us for the tremendous opportunity to know and love your child.

With gratitude,
Stefanie and Kent

Why We Are Choosing to Adopt

We both absolutely adore children! As we embarked on trying to build our family, adoption was always part of our discussions, since both of our childhood best friends are adopted. However, after consulting doctors and specialists, it became clear that adoption would be the safest option for us to realize our dream of expanding our family. We are so grateful that our family and friends (who we consider family) are extremely supportive and we are so lucky to have our parents live close by, so your baby will be surrounded by a loving, extended family.

Our Lifestyle

Since we are blessed with wonderful year-round weather in Southern California, we try to get outside as much as we can! We love to ride our bikes together around our neighborhood or take a local path to the beach. We also frequently take a picnic to our favorite beach park, with our dog Oreo, and watch the sunset. We both really LOVE going to Disneyland (we have annual passes). There’s really no better way to wash away the stresses of the week than to ride a rollercoaster (Thunder Mountain is our favorite!), eat a churro and watch fireworks! Kent also enjoys playing tennis and surfing in his off time, while Stefanie dedicates much of her time volunteering and doing charity work for a fetal program at our local children’s hospital. She also performs in an annual musical benefiting the pediatric mental health program at the hospital.

About Stefanie, by Kent

Stefanie is, without a doubt, the most caring and thoughtful person I know. She will always go out of her way to make others feel included, loved, and cherished. Stefanie is incredibly bright (she got a perfect score on her ACT test), has a quirky and sarcastic sense of humor, and loves dancing in the car to great music (Taylor Swift is her absolute favorite). Dancing is one of her biggest passions, and she taught ballet and modern dance for 17 years.  She cherished her time teaching and took her job as a positive role model very seriously. She worked with kids from 3-18 years old, and found great joy in the time spent with her students. After finishing her time as a dance teacher, Stefanie went to graduate school and began a career in Finance. However, she still finds a way to work with children, and she currently serves on the board of a local charity that supports our local children’s hospital. She dedicates a great deal of her time helping young hospital patients and their families. I know she’ll be an incredible mother. In fact, there was an exact moment when we were dating that I knew I wanted to marry her. We were at a dinner party among friends – but there Stefanie was – playing with our friend’s 2-year-old daughter on the living room floor. The little girl was transfixed by Stefanie – hanging onto her every word and movement. Stefanie was equally enamored – smiling from ear to ear. That’s the very moment I knew I wanted to marry her – and I knew I wanted to have a family with her. I know Stefanie will shower your child with love and attention and be a fantastic mother.

About Kent, by Stefanie

The first thing I noticed about Kent when we met was his energetic smile. It comes through in photos; but, in person, his energy is infectious. He is always looking for something new to try. He loves to explore new places and attempt new skills (he recently took on surfing). Kent also loves to play tennis, fly his drone, and ride bikes to the beach. His energy, along with his sense of humor, thoughtfulness, and loving nature, will make him an amazing father. Let’s not forget his collection of Dad Jokes that he’s been testing out on our family and friends for years! At the foundation, Kent and I share the same values, goals, and humor, but we are also pretty different. Kent is super outgoing, funny, and energetic, and I’m quieter and more reserved. It’s definitely an opposites attract situation and it’s probably why we have so much fun together!  Kent is ready for whatever life throws at him and he has really pushed me to be more daring while remaining by my side for support and to cheer me on. Kent is extremely loyal and will always be there to support his friends and family on both the good days and the bad. Kent is a traveler at heart and he loves to seek out adventure. His favorite places to travel are to Hawaii (he loves to snorkel, scuba dive, and hike) and London (he loves the history, arts, and culture). As a father, Kent can’t wait to share the world with your child. With all of this said, I am certain, as a father, Kent can’t wait to run around the playground and tell horribly funny Dad jokes. But he’ll also stand up for what is right, teach kindness, and stand beside your child as they dare to try new things.

How We Met

We met in 2013, in Phoenix, through an online dating app where we learned we lived just 30 seconds from each other! Before the dating app, we had never met despite the fact that we went to the same gym, grocery store, and restaurants! We dated for a year before getting engaged in Paris on Kent’s birthday, and we got married the following year in Scottsdale, Arizona. Our wedding was a big party with lots of dancing and fun. Kent even surprised Stefanie with a self-choreographed Groomsmen dance which we love to watch over and over again!

Our Personalities

From Stefanie: Kent is gregarious, energetic, loving and supportive. He loves to try new things and explore new places. He is confident, a great communicator and is a highly competitive board game player! He is also extremely creative, loves to capture life’s moments in pictures and videos, and is excellent at planning surprises!

From Kent: Stefanie is smart, witty, and caring. She’s definitely the planner/logistics champion of our relationship – and she loves to plan fun events and trips for our family and friends. She’s often quiet around people that she meets in the beginning, but when she feels comfortable, an entirely new side of her personality comes out! She can be super funny and goofy at times. I remember, on our third date we made Halloween cupcakes at her house – and I was surprised when Stefanie changed into her pajamas put on her favorite music and starting dancing around the kitchen. Stefanie and I also think we are two of the best car dancers (we love to dance in the car while listening to music) in Southern California!

Home & Neighborhood

Our home is located in a wonderful community in Southern California designed for family, community,  and the outdoors. We moved here 3 years ago from Los Angeles with dreams of raising our family in a beautiful and active community. Our home has 4 bedrooms and a great amount of yard space for playing and spending time outside. The streets in our neighborhood are filled with children of all ages riding bikes, playing games, or riding skateboards and scooters. Our neighbors have truly become family and we live in a very tight-knit community and street. In our neighborhood community, there are several hiking trails and bike paths. We can even ride our bikes to the beach on a safe bike path, which is one of our favorite new activities. Our neighborhood also has several swimming pools, playgrounds, community gardens, and even a campground to sleep under the stars! Holidays in our neighborhood are very festive and fun, with Halloween decorating contests, Holiday light tours, 4th of July Pet Parades (our dog, Oreo, loves it!), and Easter Egg Hunts. Finally, there is a brand new K-8 school and preschool within walking distance of our home.

Our Dog, Oreo

We have one dog named Oreo. He is a 6-year-old Toy Poodle/Shih Tzu mix. We rescued him 4 years ago, and he has been an absolute joy in our lives. He has a calm demeanor and loves spending time with us. If he could speak, we’re convinced he would say cozy blankets are his absolute favorite thing. He loves to go for walks, car rides, the airport (he LOVES people!), and the beach. He is great with the children in our neighborhood, and many of them look forward to petting Oreo on his walks.

Our Families & Friends

Kent comes from a large family with 5 siblings, with everyone living in either California or Chicago. Kent’s mom lives about 20 minutes from us, while Kent’s younger brother and his wife live in Northern California. Kent’s dad and his other siblings (three brothers and a sister) live in the Chicago area. We love to visit Kent’s family in Chicago; it’s one of our favorite cities and Michigan Ave is just magical during the holidays. Additionally, Kent’s friends also live in Southern California and Illinois, with Kent’s best friend living just an hour from us. Stefanie’s parents recently relocated to California from Arizona to be closer to us. We are grateful to have them just 20 minutes away and they are so excited to be grandparents! Many of Stefanie’s very close friends live in Arizona, where she is originally from, and they visit us often. We love to go to the beach and Disneyland when they visit. We’ve also developed new friendships since moving to California, through our neighborhood and Stefanie’s fundraising work at a local children’s hospital. Most of our friends have young children or are still growing their families and we can’t wait to share our family moments and milestones with them.

Traditions

Since we got married in 2015, we have really enjoyed developing our own traditions around the holidays. We love decorating our house for Halloween and sitting on our driveway with a fire pit as kids trick-or-treat. For Christmas, Stefanie really enjoys decorating our house and we host Christmas Eve dinner every year for our friends and family. Every year, Stefanie plans activities for us to do as a family for the holidays and they are always different. It could be a Christmas Day trip to Disneyland, a night at the Nutcracker, a holiday Boat Parade; but, no matter what, she finds great joy in seeing the whole family experience the magic of the holidays. As a couple, our traditions include many holidays and birthdays at Disneyland, attending concerts and going to sporting events. We also love to go see Broadway musicals at the famous Hollywood Pantages Theater. Birthdays and special events are very important to us. We love to celebrate our loved ones’ special days and accomplishments.

How We Spend 3-Day Weekends

When a 3-day weekend approaches, we both look forward to the extra time to spend with friends, family, and each other. These weekends can look different, depending on the time of year and our schedules. Sometimes we like to head down to San Diego with Oreo, our Shih Tzu/Poodle, for a quick staycation on the beach. We both enjoy being active and we all, Oreo included, love the beach! We may also stay close to home and BBQ with our neighbors, roast s’mores in the backyard, or spend a day at Disneyland. We are annual pass holders, so anytime we have a chance to go to the Happiest Place on Earth we love it. Finally, if schedules permit we may fly up to Northern California to visit Kent’s brother or to AZ to see some of Stefanie’s family and friends.

Careers & Passions

Stefanie grew up as a dancer and began teaching ballet, jazz, and contemporary at 17. She went to college on a full dance scholarship where she studied both Finance and Dance. Stefanie now works as a Finance Executive, and works just 10 minutes away from home. She loves being able to come home for lunch and is grateful for the short Southern California commute, which gives her more time at home. Stefanie continues to dedicate her free time to children through her work with the Children’s Hospital.

Kent has owned his own business since 2009 and works full-time out of our home office. He went to the University of Iowa and studied Journalism. His first career was in Sports Broadcasting and he worked on TV as a sportscaster for ABC, CBS, and NBC affiliates in Iowa, Missouri, and Arizona. Working in sports allowed him to live in different parts of the U.S. before settling in Arizona, where we met. Kent has since shifted careers, with better working hours! (Working in TV required him to work nights, weekends and all holidays! Boo!) Now, Kent works as a career coach and is able to work normal hours Monday-Friday.  And best of all, he gets to work out of our home office.  Kent loves to be active outside and you can often find him playing tennis, biking, hiking, running, or surfing.  Kent recently learned to surf and this is definitely his new favorite outdoor activity!

Cultural Diversity

We recognize and respect the importance of a child’s native culture and traditions. We also accept the immense responsibility of making sure your child is surrounded and immersed in their cultural heritage. Living in Southern California, we have access to museums, festivals, communities and other resources to ensure we, as a family, continue our education, while making sure your child is supported and has access to any information they wish, about who they are and where they come from. We will make decisions on education and extracurricular activities to make sure your child is surrounded by children and adults who look like them. We very much celebrate being your authentic self and will support your child in who they are, where they come from and who they want to become.

Travel

Our last vacation was a long weekend in San Diego. It’s about an hour drive from our house. Our parents and Oreo came along for a full family trip! We stayed right on the water and enjoyed grilling on the deck and watching the sunsets. During the day, we rode boogie boards, skim boards, and just enjoyed having our feet in the sand. It was a relaxing and quick trip that we like to do often, to get away. We like to also drive to other areas of Southern California for staycations, to explore new areas, and for a change of scenery. Kent and I both love to travel so some of our recent vacations have been to Maui, Chicago, London, and Paris. We can’t wait until we can travel and see the world through your child’s eyes.

What We Will Teach

We hope to teach our child(ren) to be kind and conduct themselves with integrity. As a family, we will find ways to help our local community. We want to teach our children to be global citizens, to learn about the world around them, and to stand up for what is right. Who they are is the most important thing about them and we will encourage them each day to be themselves and love and support them in everything they do.

Our Promise to You

We will tell your child about you right away. We will talk about your courage, love, and selflessness every day. As they get older, we will answer any questions they may have and share any information that you’re comfortable with us sharing. Your love and our gratitude will be at the forefront, at all times. You will be welcomed into our lives as much as you like and you will forever be at the forefront of our minds and hearts. It will be a wonderful responsibility to raise your child to be happy, kind, and loving in a way that will celebrate your strength and courage.
