From Us to You

Dear Expectant Parent(s),

We want to start off by thanking you for taking the time to read this letter and for your consideration. We can only imagine how difficult this decision must be. We applaud your strength. In considering this decision, we can already tell how much you love your child. As you navigate this decision, please take comfort in knowing that we have the utmost respect and compassion for you.

Since early in our relationship, we have been interested in pursuing adoption as a means to expand our family. We are at a point in our lives where we feel very much equipped to add a precious family member. We currently have three adopted cousins on Patrick’s side and have seen the profound impact that adoption makes. Though adoption is a bittersweet journey we believe it is grounded in love. Your child will have a strong support system and a close-knit extended family. Our families are so excited to welcome your child, should we be so blessed. Your child will have adoring grandparents, playful aunts and uncles, and plenty of other kids in our extended family to bond and grow up with, including our sweet baby nephew.

A bit about us – we have been together for 7 years. We met at a July 4th party in Brooklyn, NY, where we were both living at the time. For the past 4 years, we have been fortunate to call Southern California home.

Laura grew up in Southern California. Her parents are still in the same town in which she grew up and her siblings live in Northern California. Her siblings will often drive down for the weekend. Laura also has relatives on her father’s side in Japan. Patrick grew up in Illinois. His immediate family is still there, and most of his extended family is spread out between Illinois, California, and Florida.

We will strive to provide your child with a safe, loving home, endless cuddles, and opportunities to thrive. We look forward to showing your son or daughter everything that our town has to offer. From beautiful beaches to mountainous hikes, we are fortunate to have so much at our disposal.

We are so excited to raise your child and will embrace every stage of his or her life. From significant milestones like first steps and graduations to simple moments together as a family, we will cherish your child every day. We will be his or her biggest cheerleaders. As lovers of travel, we look forward to showing your child the world so he or she can learn about and appreciate other cultures. We will teach your child the importance of being a global citizen.

We will share your child’s story with him or her so your child knows just how courageous and selfless you are. Your child will know that you put their needs ahead of your own. Your child will know how much you love them. We would love to share photos and updates with you of your child if you wish.

We are humbled that you would consider us and would be eternally grateful for you and your decision. The best way we can express our appreciation is by providing the most fulfilling life possible to your son or daughter.

With love,
Patrick & Laura

About Laura, by Patrick

Laura is amazingly beautiful, both inside and out. She is not only warm and compassionate but poised and capable. When we first met, I was drawn to her sweetness and confidence. These days I love watching her snuggle with the pets, curled up in a cozy blanket, but I am also amazed at how organized and driven she can be. Her capabilities really shine in her professional life and also when we have a project to complete as a family.

She is also hilarious and consistently cracks me up. Especially when we are joking about our favorite reality shows and when she sings silly songs around the house (which, by the way, she does with a beautiful and pitch-perfect voice).  An amazing host, Laura always thinks of others before herself and is always focused on making people feel comfortable, be it my family (with whom she gets along famously), our friends, or new visitors to our home.

Laura is so supportive and understanding in our relationship. She leads by example and I have learned so much from her over the years we have been together. For instance, she has an amazing eye for aesthetics, be it fashion or interior design, something she has patiently taught me about and that I have grown to appreciate with her. When I see her interact with our friends’ and families’ young children, her eyes light up and she can’t help but glow with love and affection. She takes an interest in their lives and is delighted by their developing personalities. I am truly blessed to be her husband and I know she is going to be an incredible mother.

About Patrick, by Laura

One of the first things that drew me to Patrick was his sense of humor. Being funny comes so naturally to him. I also love how close he is with his family. They are incredibly welcoming and thoughtful. I love how effortlessly he gets along with my family. Patrick is so easy to talk to and is great at making connections with people. These qualities, along with his strong work ethic, have led him to excel in his career.

Patrick consistently remains level-headed during difficult moments. I admire his ability to tackle challenges with composure. While most would dread assembling complicated Ikea furniture, he is very patient and views it more as putting together a puzzle. He tries to see things in a positive light. He is inspiring.

Patrick is also a talented saxophonist. It was an absolute joy seeing him perform with his rock band during our NYC days. I am constantly blown away by his knowledge of movies, music, history, the list goes on. In spite of this, he is extremely humble. He is very responsible. I can always count on him to follow through. He takes care of me and protects me. I feel so lucky to call him my partner.

Why We Are Choosing to Adopt

From our early dating days, we have talked about wanting to adopt. We wish to provide a loving, stable and stimulating home environment for your son or daughter. We will provide your child with support and opportunities so he or she can thrive and build a strong sense of self. We will make a meaningful difference in your child’s life. We adore kids and wish to share our lives with your child. We look forward to creating new traditions and memories together as a family. As your child grows, we look forward to providing them with opportunities to experience new things so he or she can explore his or her passions. Lastly, we wish to adopt to become parents. We understand that raising a child is both a gift and a privilege. We have looked forward to this chapter since early in our relationship and are at a stage in our lives where we feel very much prepared.

Our Lifestyle

We love to spend our time exploring new places and making the most out of our free time. We try to take advantage of everything our city has to offer, from concerts, to museums, to hikes overlooking the ocean. We are lucky to have so much at our disposal. Our weekends typically start off with a bike ride, either to a bakery for breakfast, the park, or the farmer’s market.  We love to go to amusement parks and can’t wait to share our love of Disneyland with your son or daughter. On weekends we often get together with friends, going on adventures or just having a game night at home. We equally enjoy relaxing nights in, which typically involve ordering pizza, watching a movie, and snuggling with our dog and cats on the couch.

Our Pets

We love our trio of pets. We have a dog named Percy and 2 cats named Heidi and Helmut. They all get along swimmingly. We rescued Percy in 2019. He is a 20-lb poodle mix, roughly 4 years old, and has tons of spunk. He loves playing with his countless toys, giving loads of kisses, and getting cuddles. Percy is a great companion and never wants to leave our side. Though small, he takes his job as a guard dog very seriously. Once he gets to know someone, he loves sitting in his or her lap. Our kitties have been with us since 2016. They are both about 7 years old now. Heidi is white and grey, super sweet, and as cute as a button. She loves getting cozy on Patrick’s lap. She is a total daddy’s girl. Helmut is jet black, very curious and intelligent, and has a signature squeaky meow. The cats spend their time getting pets, napping, and playing together with their toys. They are living their best lives.

Home & Neighborhood

We live in a quiet, safe neighborhood with many young children. We reside in a 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom light-filled home that we adore. It is a detached duplex and we are in the back house, which keeps noise levels very low. As a lover of interior design, Laura has enjoyed decorating the home with the goal of making it cozy and inviting. We love to cook together and are lucky to have a roomy kitchen. Additionally, we have a quiet, private yard.

There are several great parks nearby. We are fortunate to live only a few miles from the beach and love to go year-round. Even during the cooler months, we will frequently head to the beach for a picnic lunch. We also have many beautiful hiking trails close by, allowing for a fun weekend activity. Southern California is a unique area in that we are quite close to the beach, yet the desert and mountains are only a couple of hours away, making it ideal for taking weekend road trips.

We live in a diverse town within a culturally rich metropolitan area. Our town has a highly rated school system and your child will be able to enjoy practically any recreational activity he or she may wish to try.

Our Families & Friends

We cherish our family and friends. They are our foundation of love and support. Patrick has family in California, Illinois, and Florida. His parents, sister, brother-in-law, and nephew live in Illinois, along with much of his extended family. In addition, he has an aunt and uncle in Southern California, cousins in Northern California and Hawaii, and another aunt and uncle in Florida. We try to see Patrick’s extended family as much as we can. When we go to Northern California or Illinois, we love meeting up with Patrick’s cousins and their young kids. Both sides of Patrick’s family enjoy throwing big destination family reunions. We are always planning on the next big get-together.

Laura’s parents live just 10 minutes away so we see them frequently for meals or just to get together and chat. Her brother and sister live in Northern California and frequently come down to visit. Laura has relatives in Japan, including cousins who are about our age with whom we keep in touch with over social media. We hope to visit them in Japan soon. She also has family in Ohio and Germany. We look forward to introducing them all to your child.

We have many friends near and far, some of whom we met separately while growing up, and others we met together while living in New York and Southern California. We try to see our local friends as much as our schedules allow. We will meet them for dinner, go on an adventure (like Disneyland), or just hang out together at home. We look forward to traveling again so we can visit our friends in Illinois and New York. We particularly look forward to bringing your child with us on these trips so our more distant friends can get to know him or her and spend time together.

Our Relationship with Our Parents

We are fortunate to both have wonderful parents who are great role models. They have taught us to be accepting, responsible, and caring people. With Laura’s parents and grandmother being a short drive away, we often go over to their house for dinner, and to get our dogs together for playtime in their spacious backyard. Patrick’s parents split their time between Illinois and Colorado. They make frequent trips to visit us. We enjoy taking them to the beach and our favorite local eateries while they are in town. We love meeting up with them in Colorado.

Both sets of parents are thrilled for us to be on this adoption journey. We have their full support. They are very excited to welcome a new family member that they can spoil with love and attention.

Traditions

We both love Christmas and cherish the holiday season. We will typically start decorating before Thanksgiving to get into the holiday spirit as early as possible. We usually switch off seeing Laura’s family and Patrick’s family for Christmas.

We also really enjoy Halloween. We like to decorate and carve pumpkins to get into the spooky mood. For the past few years, we have been going to Patrick’s aunt and uncle’s house to pass out candy, as the neighborhood is known to be a trick-or-treating hotspot. We are so excited to pick out costumes and take your child trick-or-treating.

When we think about traditions, food comes to mind. With Laura’s father’s family being from Japan, we enjoy Japanese cuisine and visiting Japanese markets. Laura’s mother was born in Germany and Patrick is part German. Similarly, we are big fans of German cuisine, such as schnitzel and goulash.

How We Spend a Typical, 3-Day Weekend

We love to make the most out of our time off. With 3-day weekends, we will typically take advantage of this extra time by taking a short trip. We love going to Palm Springs for the weekend to enjoy some pool time, take in the scenery, and try out some local restaurants. We may also drive down to San Diego for the weekend to visit our close friends and spend some time with their young kids. Our San Diego weekends usually involve a visit to the beach or the fabulous zoo. At the end of the weekend, we like to make sure we give ourselves enough time to recharge and prepare for the upcoming week.

If we do not go out of town, we’ll make the most of the extra day off by going to our local beach, a museum, or getting together with friends for a potluck.

Travel

Our last trip, and one of our favorite things to do in general, is to take a drive out to Colorado to Patrick’s parents’ second home. We are so excited to take trips there as a family of three. It’s the perfect place to relax, recharge, and enjoy nature’s beauty during any season. We love exploring the charming mountain towns, stargazing at night, and then getting cozy by the fire and playing cards. Percy loves going on hikes in Colorado, especially if they involve splashing in a creek. We can enjoy skiing in the winter and hiking and biking in the summer. It’s a wonderful place to visit year-round, and we truly adore going there. The drive through the beautiful Southwest is part of the fun.

We are in agreement that our favorite trip together was Italy. We had a blast trying hole-in-the-wall restaurants and visiting museums in Naples, toured the ancient cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, and had the pleasure of enjoying the seaside town of Positano.

We look forward to taking your child on trips throughout the U.S. and abroad whenever possible so he or she can see the world and experience new cultures.

Cultural Diversity

We will encourage your child to foster pride in his or her background. We both strongly believe that differences should be celebrated, as they make us who we are. We will do the work necessary to understand your child’s heritage, such as engaging with community resources and celebrating cultural holidays. We are happy to do whatever it takes to help your son or daughter feel connected to his or her heritage. Laura is bi-racial – she is half white and half Asian. Her father’s side of the family is from Japan. Her mother, born in Germany, grew up in Ohio. Coming from a mixed background has helped Laura see the world with more of an open mind. Patrick was raised to be open-minded and accepting of other cultures. He has an African-American cousin who was adopted by his aunt and uncle as an infant. As she grew older, he learned how important it was for the family to foster and celebrate her heritage. Your child will be welcomed into a supportive community that recognizes the challenges, values, and rewards of a mixed race/ethnicity family.
