From Us to You

Aloha:

We are Dane and Kim.  Dane is a teacher and has been teaching for over 10 years now.  Kim has recently begun her teaching career and is going into her 2nd year of teaching but has been working with children in the community for 6 years.

It is through our experiences in the educational field that prompted us to adopt.  We understand how special every child is and believe that every child is a precious gift.  Right now we see each of our students as “our kids.”  We celebrate their success and work with them through the tough times.  Because of our love for children, we want to be parents and eagerly await a child of our own.

Family is very important to the both of us.  We live by and are very close with our families.  Every week we have dinner at our family’s house, where we laugh and share stories.  There is always good food and good company when the family gets together.  Our families are eagerly awaiting for us to become parents and welcome a new child into the family.  One of Dane’s brothers just had his first child, who has become the center of attention.  We joke that she has the strongest finger because she just points and gets whatever she wants.

We live in such a beautiful place and can’t wait to share its beauty with your child.  We can’t wait to go hiking in a volcano, play in snow at the top of the tallest mountain in the world, or go surfing at one of our wonderful beaches.  We are a very active couple who love to exercise and move around and can’t wait to share these passions with your child. Dane also enjoys watching sports, woodworking, and running, while Kim likes to cook, bake, and craft.

Growing up, our parents instilled in us that through perseverance anything is possible.  This is something that we both value and want to pass down to Your child as well.  We also value respect, compassion, and self-confidence.  These are things that we teach our students every day and something we will teach your child.

In our house, we also have a very sweet yet spoiled Yorkie Shih Tzu named Manning.  She is a loving, loyal and beautiful dog who loves to cuddle and follow us around.  She blesses us with so many kisses every day.  She will make for an amazing companion for your child.

We feel truly blessed that you would consider us with such a precious gift.  For us, family is the most important thing in our lives.  We believe that family means you will love and be loved for the rest of your life. We would welcome your child into our family and they will know LOVE, LAUGHTER, WARMTH, and JOY.  Our family sticks together and we would be there for your child through every step of their life.  Thank you so much for taking the time to learn a little more about our family.  We await with open arms and an open heart.

Love,
Dane, Kim & Manning

Why We Are Choosing to Adopt

We know adoption is the way we want to start our family.  Our hearts are open and full of love to share and will provide a wonderful home and life for your child.

For us, adoption is a calling.  Through our jobs, we see children from many different backgrounds and with many different experiences.  We knew that we could provide a safe, stable, loving environment for a child.  We very much are excited to become parents and can’t wait to build many memories together.

About Kim, by Dane

I remember when I first got to know Kim. I was amazed at how independent and confident she was, yet she made you feel so comfortable and at ease.  Kim is the most amazing person I know.  She is always thinking of others and is always willing to help everyone. She cooks me the most amazing meals.  I love her so much and I know that she will be an amazing mother to your child because she is extremely caring and loving.  I’ve seen Kim work with adolescents and how she figures out what each child needs and does whatever it takes to give it to that child, whether it is extra attention or giving them some.  That’s how I know she will make a great mother.

About Dane, by Kim

Dane swept me off my feet during our courtship.  I was amazed at his passion for his students and workplace colleagues.  Dane is an active member of our community and he enjoys volunteering to coach baseball at the local high school or hosting fitness events on the weekends.  Dane is extremely dedicated to involving himself in anything that will benefit his students by obtaining higher-level education and workshop training.  I admire his selflessness and how he never expects anything in return from others.  I love that he inspired me to be in the education field and I hope to have as great of an impact on my students as he has had on his.  His current and former students visit him and like to volunteer to be helping hands.  He inspires so many people to give back in one way or another.  I know that Dane will be a great father because he is willing to put his energy and love into caring for a child.  He is so excited about starting a family with me and we talk about getting the nursery ready to welcome a baby.  I know Dane will be the best father.

Lifestyle

In our everyday lives like to participate in school and community events like sports and dances or attend community plays.  Our community is not overly huge which is what makes it so special. We go and watch our students showcase their many talents from sports to song and dance.  We get to meet their families and show our support.  It brings us a lot of joy helping our community and seeing what our wonderful town has to offer.

Spending time with our families is important as well so we’ll often have dinners or just stop by to hang out.  We are very close and see each other or talk at least once a day.  We go to see our 1-year-old niece quite often as well.  She is growing up so quickly.  Witnessing her go through each milestone fills us with such joy and makes us feel so proud.  We can only imagine what it will be like with our own child.

We believe family and community are a very important part of raising a child.  They are the foundation for a person so we work very hard at making those things a big part of our life.

When your baby joins our family, we will be taking time away from work and enjoying being first time parents.  We want to devote all of our time to enjoying the parenting process and loving your child.  We can’t wait to take your child to the community events and have family over to see the new baby.

As your child grows we want them to have as many experiences as possible and we feel that community events are a good way to see new people and learn about different things, places, cultures, and ethnicities in a safe and loving way.  There are so many different ethnicities, customs, traditions, and activities and we like to participate in all of them, from watching a high school sporting event to attending a play or participating in a Chinese New Year Parade.  Your child will always have a big family circle that loves them and is there to support them as well.

Our Dog, Manning

We have a very sweet but spoiled dog named Manning.  Dane’s mom often jokes that Manning doesn’t know she is a dog and thinks she is a human. She likes to snuggle up next to you and get petted.  Manning will be such a great pet for your child.  We think dogs are amazing animals that teach us a lot about unconditional love and loyalty.

Home & Neighborhood

A house is made of walls and beams, while a home is built with love and dreams.  Our home sits on top of a hill, overlooking a beautiful bay.  We often work out on our patio as the sun rises over the bay.  We imagine right now lounging around while your child plays in the yard with their friends.  Our house has 3 bedrooms so your child will have their own room.  We can’t wait to paint and decorate it with their favorite colors and characters.  We also have a nice lanai that gets a cool breeze in the afternoons.  It will be an excellent place to relax after school, have a snack or spend some time with friends.  Kim can’t wait to get your child in the kitchen and teach them some of her favorite recipes.  The perfect timing for taking the cake out of the oven so it’s firm but gooey at the same time.  Dane can’t wait to take your child to the park that is within walking distance and play on the playground.  Maybe even shoot some baskets or throw and catch a football.

Our neighborhood is right in the heart of our town.  We are within minutes in either direction of family, food, schools, entertainment, and everything we’d need.  We can drive a few minutes and go swimming at any one of our many beautiful beaches or we can take about an hour drive and play on top of a snowy mountain.  We cant wait to introduce your child to the beach.  Let them feel the soft sand under their toes, smell the salt in the air and feel the coolness of the water.  Then another day let them feel the coldness of the snow in their hands, the slickness of the ground, and maybe throw a few snowballs at each other.  Our town is a beautiful area to raise a child, small enough that you feel connected to people, yet big enough to provide opportunities and gain new experiences.

Our Families & Friends

Both of our immediate families live within 10 minutes of us.  Dane’s family is made up of mostly boys.  He has 3 brothers, so when we all get together it is loud, competitive, and full of jokes.  Both of Dane’s parents are from another island so a lot of his other relatives are a 50 minute plane ride away.  One of Dane’s brothers just had a daughter, so we’ve become an Aunty and Uncle.  We can’t wait to introduce your child to her. It will be great having a cousin so close in age so they can grow up together.  Seeing how Dane’s family treats his brother’s child is very comforting.  Everyone is very involved, there is always someone at his house helping them with whatever they need.  We know that we will be supported and your child will be supported at all times.  Dane’s mom is super excited and can’t wait for us to adopt.  She is always asking how the process is going and is planning on retiring soon so she can spend more time with her grandchildren.  Dane’s dad loves surfing and can’t wait to teach your child how to hang ten.

Kim also has 2 brothers in her family.  One of them lives in Las Vegas and the other is in California.  She has a big extended family in town, who gets together often.  When her family gets together it’s all about amazing food and tradition.  The elders are always playing with the kids and passing on their wisdom and experience.  They teach them about what it was like for them growing up and moving to a new country.  They teach them how to make traditional Filipino food like adobo (a savory, main dish) and puto (a yummy dessert!). It’s a lot of fun seeing the generations interact.  Kim also has 2 nephews and 1 niece who are between the ages of 3-5.  So your child will also have cousins close in age on Kim’s side of the family.  Kim and her mom often go shopping on the weekend, they both can’t wait to pick out cute clothes and toys for your child and spend time walking around our shops in town looking for the best deals.  Kim’s dad loves biking.  He rides his bike around the whole island and travels often to compete in different bike races.  He would love to have a biking companion to go along with him or even someone who would just sit in the side companion car that he could take around town.

Both of our families are extremely excited.  They will be over at our house every day possible to see their grandchild.  Your child will be welcomed into our family and will be loved.  Our family can get a little loud at times with so many boys around but there is always lots of love and support.  Our families take care of each other and will open our hearts to your child.

Our Relationship with You

We are open to whatever type of relationship you would want and would love to get to know you and your family if that is what you would like.  We understand that this is not an easy decision and want to help you in whatever way we can.  We do believe that “it takes a village to raise a child” and we think it’s awesome if you want to have an ongoing relationship.  We may live an ocean away, but with today’s technology, the distance would not get in the way.  We will respect your wishes and be forever grateful.

Racial & Cultural Diversity

Hawaii is a diverse state with many ethnicities and customs.  Your child will grow up seeing and being a part of many unique customs.  They will experience many cultures and we will encourage your child to learn about different beliefs, ethnicities, and cultural values.  Your child will grow up learning about Japanese, Filipino, Chinese, American, and many other customs that have made their way into everyday Hawaii Life.  We value experiences and will expose your child to many different ones, from foods, to people, to traditions and your child will see unique ways of thinking and doing things.   There is no better place than Hawaii to see racial and cultural diversity.

Traditions

One of our traditions is celebrating holidays twice.  We often schedule things like birthdays, Christmas, and Thanksgiving with both families so we get double the celebration. This means twice as much food, family, and fun.  Kim’s family celebrations often include a lot of traditions.  Her family is multigenerational and the elders always make the best Filipino food.  Uncle always works hard to roll and make the best Lumpia, we try to wrap it as tight as he does but no one can come close to him.  Aunty makes the best Pancit Noodles, no matter how hard we try, we can’t get it quite the same.  She says it’s “because of the love she puts in.”

Dane’s family celebrations are so much fun as well.  We are always in charge of dessert because Kim makes the best caramel apples and gooey butter cake but really, all her desserts are amazing.  We get so hungry preparing dessert because the smell in our house is to die for.  Dane is the “taste tester” and he takes his job very seriously.  With Dane’s family full of boys, the table is overflowing with food but somehow it’s always eaten, there is never an empty belly.  Your child will get to experience so many delicious foods and learn so much about how food and culture tie in with each other.

A fun tradition we do together is go for late night snacks to cool down.  Hawaii can get very muggy, so to cool off, we will jump in the car with Manning and go riding around town.  We stop at our local ice cream shop and pick up a cone or shake.  These times are often the best times we have together because we can cool off, sit and enjoy each other company.  We have had many fun memories riding around our town, like during Christmas, seeing which house put up the best Christmas decorations, or simple things like just talking about our day.  Manning even gets in on the fun sneaking in a taste when we aren’t paying attention.

Dane is a big sports fan so Kim will cook his game day food when there is a big game.  Football, baseball, basketball, soccer, if there is competition Dane loves to watch.  But if the Atlanta Braves, Denver Broncos, or Indianapolis Colts are playing, then cheering becomes serious.  We both will throw on our team jersey or shirt and we will sit and cheer our lungs out.  We can’t wait to dress your child up in matching jerseys to sit and watch our favorite sports as a family.

Another thing we do is celebrate each other’s successes as much as possible, no matter how big or small.  Often times it’s an excuse to go out and have a nice dinner. Some of the things we celebrate are having a great day at work, the anniversary of the day we met, finishing a big project, or any time we can show each other how proud we are of each other. Maybe Kim was able to get her most challenging student to complete his homework, so we will go eat at her favorite Italian restaurant.  Being able to show our love and appreciation for each other is very important to us.  We can definitely see ourselves doing this with your child.  Celebrating any success big or small is something that is important to us and it is how we show our love.

Our Careers

We both chose to become teachers because of our love of children, learning, and wanting to make a difference.  Being a teacher is also one of the most rewarding careers because you can actually make a difference in someone’s life.  Dane grew up with both his parents as teachers and saw the impact a teacher could make in someone’s life.  He often saw people come up to his parents and thank them for working with them.  Kim grew interested in teaching after seeing Dane work and gaining some experience in the field through after school programs and summer programs.  Teaching is not just a career for both of us but a calling that we truly enjoy.  The other good thing about teaching is being on the same schedule as your child.  This means that during holidays, summer and after school, we will be available to your child.

Education

We believe education is very important and feel that education means freedom.  Through education, you can do anything.  We are both college graduates and see the importance of learning and growing throughout life.  We plan to instill the love of learning in your child so that they can continue to grow.  Working in the educational field, one of the hardest things we deal with is when a child loses the spark of learning.  It is our job as teachers and will be our job as parents to nurture that spark so your child will continue to question and wonder and think throughout their life.

What We Will Teach

We will teach your child the importance of dedication, compassion, respect and self-confidence and just being a good person.

What We Will Share

We will tell your child that you made the hardest choice imaginable but you did it out of love for them and that you wanted what was best for them. Your child will know that we support them getting to know you and having a relationship with you if that is what you are open to. We will always do what is in your child’s best interest and they will understand that you made a difficult decision out of love for them and your child will know and respect you and their adoption story.

Our Promise to You

We promise that your child will have a wonderful childhood surrounded by laughter, fun, learning, support, and lots of love.  And we promise to always respect you and place your child’s best interest above all else.
