From Us to You

Dear Expectant Mother,

Thank you for taking the time to get to know us a little better.  We respect and are truly humbled by your openness to consider adoption.  We want to let you know that if you choose us to be the parents of your child, your child will be coming to a home full of love and support and we would be forever grateful to you.

Let us introduce ourselves.  We are Dane and Kim.  Dane is a teacher and has been teaching for 10 years now.  Kim has just begun her teaching career but she has been working with children in an after school program for 4 years.  It is through our experiences in the educational field that prompted us to adopt.  We understand how special every child is and believe that every child is a precious gift.  Right now we see each of our students as “our kids.”  We celebrate their success and work with them through the tough times.  We really believe that adoption is our calling and eagerly await a child of our own.

Family is very important to the both of us.  We live by and are very close with our families.  Every week we have dinner at our family’s house, where we laugh and share stories.  There is always good food and good company when the family gets together.  Our families are eagerly awaiting a new addition.  One of Dane’s brothers is expecting their first child, which will be the first grandchild for Dane’s parents.  To see Dane’s parents get excited for this new addition has been awesome because they will make for amazing grandparents.  For Kim’s parents, this will be their first grandchild that lives in Hawaii, so they are excited to be able to see them anytime they want.  Both families are almost as excited as we are to welcome a new child.

We live in such a beautiful place and can’t wait to share its beauty with your child.  We can’t wait to go hiking in a volcano, play in snow at the top of the tallest mountain in the world or go surfing at one of our wonderful beaches.  We are a very active couple who love to exercise and move around and can’t wait to share these passions with your child. Dane also enjoys watching sports, woodworking and running, while Kim likes to cook, bake and craft.

Growing up, our parents instilled a hard work ethic into both of us.  We believe that through perseverance anything is possible.  This is something that we both value and want to pass down to our child as well.  We also value respect, compassion and self-confidence.  These are things that we try to teach our students every day and something we will strive to teach your child.

In our house we also have an 10-year-old, spoiled Yorkie Shih Tzu named Manning.  She a loving, loyal and beautiful dog who loves to cuddle and follow us around.  She blesses us with so many kisses every day.  She will make for an amazing “sister” and companion for your child.

We cannot begin to express the gratitude we would have towards you should you allow us to bring your child into our family.  All we can promise is that your child will have an enjoyable childhood surrounded by laughter, fun, learning, support and lots of love.  We want to thank you for taking the time to learn a little more about our family.

Love,

Dane, Kim & Manning

Why We Are Choosing to Adopt

Dane always knew he wanted to adopt.  It has always been important to him to help others.  He saw adoption as a way to support another life and give a child a home full of love and support.  When Dane discussed with Kim his need to adopt, she immediately agreed.  She loved the idea and saw herself adopting a child as well.  Together we believe that we can provide a home full of love and support.  We know adoption is the way we want to start and build our family.  It is a long process but is something we really believe in.  We know that the right child will come at the right time who we will be able to love and support.  Our hearts are open and full of love to share.  Adoption is something we take very seriously and we will provide a wonderful home for your child.

About Kim, by Dane

I remember when I first got to know Kim. I was amazed at how independent and confident she was, yet she made you feel so comfortable and at ease.  Kim is the most amazing person I know.  She is always thinking of others and constantly trying to make herself better.  She is always willing to help anyone who needs it even though she is finishing school while working 3 jobs. She always seems to find time to cook me the most amazing meals.  I love that she works so hard to make sure I am happy and often times puts my needs over her own.  I know that she will make an amazing mother because she always puts others ahead of herself and she is extremely caring and loving.  I’ve seen Kim work with adolescents during her job and she does a great job with them.  She figures out what each child needs and does whatever it takes to give it to that child, whether it is extra attention, some space or tough love.  I can tell all her students trust her and are very comfortable with her, yet respect her.  That’s how I know she will make a great mother.

About Dane, by Kim

Dane swept me off my feet during our courtship.  I was amazed at his achievements in his career and the tireless hours he put into the classroom, with his students, and workplace colleagues.  Dane is an active member of our community and you will always find him volunteering any time he had to coach baseball at the local high school or host fitness events on the weekends.  Dane is extremely dedicated to involving himself in anything that will benefit his students by obtaining higher-level education and workshop training.  I admire his selflessness and how he never expects anything in return from others.  I love that he inspired me to be in the education field and I hope to have as great of an impact he has had.  His current and former students will visit him in their free time and volunteer to be helping hands.  He inspires so many people to give back in one way or another.  I know that Dane will be a great father because he is willing to put his energy and sacrifice into caring for a child.  He is so excited about starting a family with me and we talk about home improvement projects like building a nursery.  He is happy to be switching gears for our future plans and that’s how I know Dane will be the best father.

Lifestyle

In our everyday lives, we like to stay involved with our community.  We always try to participate in school and community events like sports and dances or attend community plays.  Our community is not overly huge which is what makes it so special. When we participate in these events we spend time and get to know our students families, friends and colleagues.  It brings us a lot of joy helping our community and seeing what our wonderful town has to offer.

We also spend time with our families.  We often have dinners or just stop by to hang out.  We are very close with our family and see each other or communicate at least once a day.  We believe family and community are a very important part of raising a child.

When your baby joins our family, we see ourselves taking time away from work and focusing on being parents.  We want to devote all our time to enjoying the parenting process and loving your child.  We see us continuing to attend community events as well as having family over.  We think it is very important to expose your child to as many experiences as possible.  Community events are a good way to see new people and learn about different things.  At the same time, we know our families will be spending a lot of time with us and it is important to us that your child spends as much time with family as possible.  Knowing that there is a big family circle that loves them is important to us.

We want your child to get as many experiences as possible.  Our lifestyle will be reflective of that belief by trying to expose your child to many different things, places, cultures and ethnicities in a safe and loving way.  We want your child to always feel supported and have both parents available as much as possible.

Our Dog, Manning

We have a spoiled dog named Manning.  Dane’s mom often jokes that Manning doesn’t know she is a dog, and thinks she is a human.  Manning definitely runs the house right now.  She gets whatever she wants but all she usually wants is to snuggle up next to you and get pet.  Manning will make for an amazing “sister” and picture partner.  We think dogs are amazing animals that can teach us a lot about unconditional love and loyalty.  They also teach us about responsibility and commitment.  We plan to continue to have a least 1 pet with us always.

Home & Neighborhood

We live in a 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom house.  Our house sits on top of a hill that overlooks a bay.  Our location is very centralized.  Schools, a university and downtown are only minutes away.  We have 2 parks within walking distance.  Our town is very unique because we have beautiful beaches and snowy mountains all within an hour of each other.  There are also many family friendly community events that we are often a part of because of our jobs.  We participate in fun runs, family days and dances.  We would love to participate in more of them with your child.

Our Families & Friends

Both of our immediate families live within 10 minutes of us.  Dane’s family is made up of mostly boys.  He has 3 brothers, so when we all get together it is loud, competitive and full of jokes.  Both of Dane’s parents are from another island so a lot of his other relatives are a 50 minute plane ride away.  Kim has 2 brothers.  One of them lives in Las Vegas and the other is finishing up his school here.  She has a big extended family who gets together often.  When her family gets together it’s all about amazing food and tradition.  The elders are always playing with the kids and passing on their wisdom and experience.  It’s a lot of fun seeing the generations interact.  Our families are extremely excited to welcome in a new family member.

Our Relationship with You

We are open to whatever type of relationship you would want.  We are open to getting to know you and your family if that is what you would like.  We understand that this is not an easy decision and we want to help you in whatever way we can.  We do believe that “it takes a village to raise a child” and we think it’s awesome if you want to hold a relationship.  We may live an ocean away, but with today’s technology, the distance would not get in the way.  Whatever will help you and your baby will be in our best interest as well.  That is why we will respect your wishes and be forever grateful.

Cultural Diversity

Hawaii is a diverse state with many ethnicities and customs.  Your child will grow up seeing and being a part of many unique customs.  They will experience many cultures. We will encourage your child to learn about different beliefs and cultural values.  We often don’t realize how unique Hawaii is.  Your child will grow up learning about Japanese, Filipino, Chinese, American and many other customs that have made their way into everyday Hawaii Life.  We value experiences and will expose your child to many different ones, from foods, to people, to traditions we want your child to see unique ways of thinking and doing things.   If you value cultural diversity, there is no better place than Hawaii.

Traditions

One of our traditions is celebrating holidays twice.  We often schedule things like birthdays, Christmas, and Thanksgiving with both families so we get double the celebration. This means twice as much food, family, and fun. A fun tradition we do together is going for a ride at night for late night snacks or sometimes to just cool down.  Hawaii can get very muggy, so to cool off, we will jump in the car with Manning and go riding around town.  Another family tradition we have is family dinners at least once a week.  We either have dinner with Dane’s parents or Kim’s parents where either side of our family comes together to eat and enjoy each other’s company.  Another thing we do is celebrate each other’s successes as much as possible, no matter how big or small.  Often times it’s an excuse to go out and have a nice dinner. Some of the things we celebrate are having a great day at work, the anniversary of the day we met, finishing a big project, or any time we can show each other how proud we are of each other. This is a tradition we definitely will continue with your child.

Our Careers

We both chose to become educators because of our love of children, learning and wanting to make a difference.  The education field is one of the most difficult because it is very fluid with never a dull moment.  The education field is also one of the most rewarding because you can actually make a difference in someone’s life.  Dane grew up with both his parents as teachers and saw the impact a teacher could make in someone’s life.  He often saw people come up to his parents and thank them for working with them.  Kim grew interested in teaching after seeing Dane work and gaining some experience in the field through after school programs and summer programs.  Teaching is not just a career for both of us but a calling that we truly enjoy.  The other good thing about teaching is being on the same schedule as your child.  This means that holidays, summer and after school, we will be available to your child.

Education

We believe education is very important.  We think education means freedom.  Through education you can do anything.  We are both college graduates and see the importance of learning and growing throughout life.  We plan to instill the love of learning in your child so that they can continue to grow.  Working in the educational field, one of the hardest things we deal with is when a child loses the spark of learning.  It is our job as teachers and will be our job as parents to nurture that spark so your child will continue to question and wonder and think throughout their life.  We plan to start a college fund for them as soon as we can so that that is not something they need to worry about as they get older. Dane’s parents both being teachers, showed him the importance from a young age that parents play in a child’s education.  Showing a real interest in what they are learning, having a space for learning and a routine is very important.  Also important is genuinely asking a child about their dreams and goals and giving them the experiences to help them along the way.  Education is definitely something that is valued in our home.

What We Will Teach

We hope to teach your child hard work, dedication, compassion, respect and self-confidence. As educators, these are the same things we try to teach our students as well because above all, we value creating good humans.  Both of our parents instilled in us the value of hard work and respect.  Those 2 traits above all have helped us get to where we are now.  So we definitely want to teach your child the importance of those traits.

What We Will Share

We will tell your child that you made the hardest choice imaginable but you did what you felt was right. You chose us to raise your beautiful child because you wanted what was best for them. Your child will know that we will support them getting to know you and have a relationship with you, if that is what you are open to. We want your child to understand that everyone, including us and you, will always try to do what is in their best interest. We know this is a difficult decision and your child will know and respect you and their adoption story.

Our Promise to You

Right now Dane’s brother and his wife are expecting and going through the pregnancy process.  Seeing them go through the process and understanding how difficult it is really helped us have a deeper understanding of how hard this decision can be to make. We will give you our ultimate respect and will be grateful that you are able to allow us to raise the precious child you created.
