From Us to You

A Letter of Love to Our Child’s Birthmother,

Your interest in adoption is possibly the most selfless act a mother could do for her child, and we admire your courage. We have always known adoption would be our path. Maybe it is because Kristina was taken in and cared for by a friend’s family when she was young and our definition of family extends beyond blood. Or maybe it is because we have known pregnancy would never be possible for us. No matter the reason, adoption holds a very special place in our hearts. We have seen firsthand through family and friends the happiness adoption can bring.

We met when we were in high school and have been happily married for over 11 years. Mike is an airline pilot and Kristina is a personal caregiver; however, Kristina is thrilled to soon become a stay-at-home mom. Even though we currently live in North Carolina, we both grew up in Wisconsin and are true Midwesterners at heart. We have always had dreams of raising a beautiful family and could not be more excited to welcome a child into our lives!

Both of us are very close to our families, and they are elated for a new member to join the crew! Your child instantly will be loved by aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, friends and their pets galore (cue the hugs, unconditional love, and Christmas gifts of underwear). We get together regularly for weekend visits, holidays, big events, and vacations. In our life, adoption is already present and spoken about openly. Your child will always know he or she belongs.

We will be certain your child knows the very first act of love he or she received was your decision to pursue adoption. An open adoption is an option for us, but ultimately the decision is yours to make. Either way, we promise a lifetime of commitment, joy, and boundless love for your child. We extend our hearts to you as we continue on this life-changing journey together!

With love,
Mike and Kristina

Our Lifestyle

We have a unique lifestyle. Because we don’t work 8-5 jobs, we have a lot of quality time to spend with each other, our family and friends, and one day with a child.  We are active, energetic, and love life. We never stop learning and always seek out new experiences. We have a passion and respect for nature and want to take in all of its greatness. Education is important to us, not only because it offers an advantage in life, but because of its exposure to new and exciting ideas. We are ambitious and have strong Midwestern work ethics. We understand the pride and importance of a job well done.

Teamwork really does make the dream work. Our family and friends are our lives, and we are there for each other in good times and in bad. We recognize that we have built a very fortunate life and are very grateful for it. However, we know that without each other it all disappears.

We value kindness, compassion, gratitude, equality, forgiveness, happiness, commitment, and service. It’s not uncommon to find us paying it forward through volunteer work or lending a helpful hand. We recognize that it truly takes a village. We learned early on in life that good health is crucial, and we have little without it. Laughter is truly the best medicine and kindness spreads. We will be certain your child will know all of these things as well.

About Kristina

Kristina always has had the ability to light up a room. I suppose that is why I was immediately drawn to her when we were teenagers. She has a friendly and upbeat personality with a beautiful smile. Some might call her “bubbly.” She makes friends easily and always has a kind word for everyone. Not only is Kristina extremely personable, but she is also one the smartest, most driven people I have ever met. In her late 20’s, Kristina decided to go back to school where she worked tirelessly to earn her Doctor of Pharmacy degree. She has amazing career potential but has made what I would consider the difficult decision–but it wasn’t difficult for her–that it will be much more fulfilling to be a stay-at-home parent to our child. She is full of love and kindness. From building homes with Habitat for Humanity to spending time with inner-city youth, Kristina has always wanted to give back. She has done volunteer work on and off whenever her schedule has allowed. Kristina is also my rock. I can always rely on Kristina to keep our lives organized. Whether it is reminding me of a social event for the upcoming week, or simply to take out the trash, she is organized and thorough. Above all, Kristina is my best friend, the person who is always there for me, who I share my hopes and dreams with, and who I have had by my side every step of the way as we make those hopes and dreams a reality. It is Kristina’s kindness, compassion, and understanding that makes her a wonderful wife and will also make her a wonderful mother.

About Mike

Mike and I were drawn to each other from the moment we met in high school. We always asked friends the whereabouts of one another or wound up hanging out with each other at a party. It was as though we knew we’d one day end up together but wanted to experience life apart for a bit. It’s not hard to like Mike…I know because he’s my best friend. His reserved, patient personality makes him extremely easy-going and will make him an excellent father. He’s gentle, loyal, and kind. He values hard work and takes personal pride in putting his best foot forward. He’s a leader at work and an outstanding role model. At home, he’s affectionate and warm, and after 18 years together, we still look forward to seeing each other after a long day. He’s amazing with children. It’s heartwarming to see him read to our niece or play catch with our friends’ kids. I’m looking forward to the day he has a child of his own to love and cherish.

Home & Neighborhood

Our neighborhood is located in a small suburb not far outside of a major city. It’s a quaint community with large lots, beautiful mature trees, rolling hills, and water views. It’s filled with families with children, and everyone on our street knows each other by name. There are always people outside walking their dogs and children riding their bikes and playing with friends. In the summer the kids swim and fish at the community dock and in the winter, they gather to build snowmen and sled down the neighborhood hill. We regularly get together as neighbors to enjoy a meal, an afternoon boating on the lake, or a football game.

Our home is located at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac just a block from the lake. It backs up to a forest filled with deer, fox, birds, squirrels, and rabbits. It’s warm and inviting and boasts enough room for all our visiting family and friends. Most importantly, it already has a room ready and waiting for a child.

Our Cat, Marley

Meet Marley, our 8-year-old Himalayan rescue cat. She was surrendered to animal control weighing a mere 4 pounds and had very little fur due to extreme malnutrition. Today, she is very healthy with beautiful long fur and an adorable grumpy face. She is gentle, loving, and sweet. She enjoys being brushed, basking in the sunshine, and watching birds out the window. She makes loud noises when she eats and is always sure to tell you when she wants attention. She especially loves snuggling on the couch (rooting for the Packers in her jersey during football season). One day she’ll make an excellent furry buddy for a child.

How We Spend a Three-Day Weekend

We are very fortunate that both of our schedules allow us to have three-day weekends every week. They are often spent on the nearby lake boating, fishing, tubing, jet-skiing, and swimming. Or we may head off to a park for hiking, camping, and enjoying the great outdoors. On lazy weekends you’ll find us at home watching football or movies, working in the garden, or playing cards and board games. No matter the activity you’ll almost always find us with friends and family.

Travel

We absolutely love vacations, so much so that we take many of them each year (and we are always sure to drag lots of family and friends with us). Thanks to Mike’s job as a pilot, the sky’s the limit! We have not only had the opportunity to see the United States but the entire world, unlike most ever could. Whether on the beach or in the mountains, domestic or afar, the time always includes game nights, taking in some local culture, and dinners together.

Most recently, we took a 40-mile backpacking trip to the blue-green waters of Havasu Falls in the Grand Canyon. We also explored the islands of New Zealand in an RV, tubed glowworm caves, hiked over glaciers, and kayaked fjords. Our upcoming vacation is a tour of Iceland, its ice caves, geothermic spas, and hopefully, we’ll catch a view of the Northern Lights.

Our enthusiasm for travel and adventure is something we cannot wait to share with your child…trips to Legoland, camping and stargazing America’s national parks, downhill skiing the mountains of Switzerland, building sandcastles on the beaches of California, exploring the Smithsonian Museum, snorkeling the reefs of Australia, floating aboard a Disney cruise…the options are truly endless. We want to expose your child to the world and all the beauty and diversity it has to offer!

Our Families & Friends

Both of us are very close to our families and see them often. We get together for weekend visits, holidays, big events, and for the yearly family vacation. Our most recent family vacations have included a beach house on Tybee Island, a lake cabin in Wisconsin, and a mountain home atop Mt. Hood. We swim, boat, hike, fish, and kayak throughout the day and enjoy board games, cards, movies, puzzles, and meals together in the evening.

We regularly spend time with our friends and their children as well. It’s not uncommon to find us at the trampoline park, a backyard cook-out, or playing a few rounds of miniature golf. Our neighbors also have become a great support system and are dear friends.

Adoption is already present in our everyday life. We have numerous friends and family with children who were adopted and Kristina’s sister is currently in the process of adopting siblings. Your child will be surrounded with acceptance, love, and support along this life-changing journey.

Traditions

All of our traditions seem to revolve around food, family, and friends….but what better things are there in life?! The beginning of the year brings a downhill ski trip with Kristina’s family. We enjoy each other’s company on the slopes and return to the ski condo for hot chocolate, a dip in the hot tub, and roasting marshmallows over the fire. Every summer, you’ll find Mike’s family together for a week in a rental home on the ocean or a lake. There are outdoor water activities throughout the day and evenings of dinner together.

Holidays are our absolute favorite times of the year! We spend Super Bowl Sunday with friends devouring appetizers and pizza. The Fourth of July is spent with friends grilling outside with fireworks over the lake at dusk.  At Halloween, we decorate the front door, dress up in costumes, and hand out big candy bars to the trick-or-treaters. Thanksgiving gathers Kristina’s entire family at our house for a feast prepared together around our kitchen island. We make beautiful, tasty homemade pies and eat until we can eat no more. Christmas is probably the craziest holiday of all and it lasts all month long. We go overboard with decorations, days of Christmas cookie baking, and have endless holiday cheer. Early in the month, our neighborhood hosts a potluck dinner with gifts shared in the White Elephant game. Later in the month, we spend the holiday with both of our families. At Mike’s family holiday there is a Christmas ham, stockings overflowing with gifts, Secret Santa, and the magic of Christmas through the eyes of our little nieces and nephew. At Kristina’s family holiday there is the Christmas Dice game, homemade Chex Party Mix, decorating of gingerbread houses, Christmas Trivia, and a roast beef prepared by Kristina’s brother-in-law.
